Timney Trigger for FN Model 70

Has anyone tried the Timney replacement trigger for the FN-built Winchester Model 70?

Installation looks pretty straightforward, and the price seems reasonable. I'm just wondering if it's a worthwhile upgrade vs. digging out the epoxy on the factory MOA unit and lowering pull weight.

Haven't tried the Timney, but adjusting the OEM 2-lever Win70 trigger is easy, provided it isn't creepy.

Don't "dig" the epoxy out, cook it off. A propane torch and about 10-15 seconds, and it flakes right off.

A $0.20 spring will get the trigger down to 1.5-2.0lb no problem.

Don't turn the trigger down below 2.5 with the OEM spring.

Jard makes a trigger for the TSR as well. I was going to get one until I noticed they were not adjustable. A good trigger Im sure, but ya want what ya want. As for Timney, they will not answer their phone. I left a message. Maybe they will call back.

Forgot to mention, Rifle Basix will be making a replacement trigger for the TSR XP as well. Not sure as to when it will be out.

Is it a safety issue going below 2.5lb on the OEM spring, or is there some other issue to watch out for?

The stock trigger works very well. On an FN there's no need to go aftermarket.

They work well sure. But too heavy for my taste and everyone else whom shot it. The TSR anyways. They are set at 3&3/4 pounds.
Will go down to three I believe. Yeah, I'd much rather have a Timney at 2&1/2 pounds. Just personal preference I reckon.

Yes, you'll wind up with slam fires.

The OEM spring wire is too heavy, and the spring is too short to be safely set below ~2.5lb. The spring on a Win70 MUST, MUST, MUST be under a decent amount of preload (displacement, not force) to ensure the trigger swings all the way forward against it's stop while you're closing the bolt. The OEM spring does NOT ensure that.

I have really gotten to like FN a lot. So much in fact that I have my TSR for sale in order to buy the A3g. Just seems to me a really good way to go for 1/2 moa guarantee. Plus, if Im correct in saying the FN SPR rifles are trued from the factory. Not to mention the barrel life one gets out of the chrome lined barrels.

Running a timney on a model 70 can cause you to lose the functioning of the safety (if you use it). You can modify that to make it work again, but I just figured I would throw that out there.

Not sure about the FNs, all my M70s are winchesters. Which had decent trigger adjustment from the factory, and with some polishing I could have smoothed them out more, but I work too much to get around to it. So I dropped in a timney. Very happy with it.

How do you lose the functioning of the safety? I thought the Winchester safety blocked the firing pin and pulled it back. How does the trigger influence that?

Do you know which M70s that would apply to? Pre 64, classic, non CRF, FN, etc?

I hunt with this rifle, so I can't lose the safety. Thanks for the tip.

I have a Timney on my FN PBR XP action. Easy to install and adjust with no problems experienced.

Nick. On that same fn model 70 I put the ptg on, I also ordered a timney moa replacement. I was super excited for this product and ordered as soon as I could. I ordered it at 2 pounds. It worked with out issue and was easy to install. No safety issues.

Perhaps folks are confusing the fn versions with the new haven versions. I also tried the Ernie the gun smith replacement springs on a few other fn's but I like the timney better.

Only complaint would be the trigger shoe, it wasnt as concave as several of the other timneys I have used on remingtons.

Give one a shot, they are not too pricey.

Did they give you any recommendations for cleaning or lubing the Timney? I've used lighter fluid in the past, but I don't know if that's a universally OK thing to do.

It's pretty humid here, and I get rained on at least once or twice per hunting season.

Nick, my M70 is a post 64 long action. Safety swings backs towards the rear of the bolt to engage. After installing the timney, the safety lever will not pivot at all, it is stuck in the fire position.

The instructions that came with the trigger mentioned that this could happen, but since I don't carry loaded, I didn't care enough to get it fixed (timney offers services to correct the problem).

I wanted my trigger down to 1.5 lbs.

I couldn't get below 2.75 lbs on the stock trigger, Timney, or Rifle Basix. All would fail the drop test and some times the pin would drop when cycling the bolt to hard.

I bought a CG X-treme Mod 22 2-stage trigger for my FN SPR on the recommendation from Short Action Customs. It is the nicest trigger I have ever tried and passes all saftey checks at 1.5 lbs for me. I never tried it any lower.

I run the Timney on my M70 Long action and I was amazed how much better it was than a tuned factory trigger. I lowered the adjustable weight as much as possible (to avoid slam fires) and had everything polished and it still was no where near as nice as the Timney Adjustable.

I'll be picking up another one for my next build too.

Awesome to hear there is another trigger option. I have not heard about the CG X-Treme but I am going to check it out right now.
