I’m looking to get into long range shooting that I could also occasionally hunt with also what are the opinions on best caliber that is light to medium recoil and able to drive tacks here a lot of talk on 6.5 question is Creedmoor or prc or is there a better one out there and would like to reload also

Nothing bigger than white tail I use 300 rum for hunting just want something more for shooting long distance but if I wanted to use it I still could for deer

You certainly don’t need a 300 RUM for short to mid range deer. Though need and preference are personal choices.

Then it comes down to energy transfer. Do your homework and calculations. Know your round and how to shoot it well. Use common sense and practice to ensure clean kills.

Then just break down and get a 6.5 Creedmoor. It’s a great all around long range caliber. The PRC is certainly an option, but imo is more suited to the hunting side of things.

Creedmoor is really running out of steam past 600 to kill a good sized animal IMHO. 7mm, 300 WM are pretty proven. New hotness that has my attention is the 300 PRC. Check out long range hunting forum dot com. Good group of guys so long as you don’t talk bad about 10mm as a backup bear gun or claim a semi-auto is accurate.

Bullet selection? You must not reload, there’s probably as many if not more .30 bullets out there than anything else!

But yeah, for factory ammo6.5 C has really taken off.

I have 300 Weatherby,300 ultra and 300 wm 7mag and 7-08 ,224 Valkyrie 22-50 just wanting something new can’t have to many

Bullet selection? You must not reload, there’s probably as many if not more .30 bullets out there than anything else!

But yeah, for factory ammo6.5 C has really taken off.

I do reload I just don’t see much load data for them calibers be honest I just started looking at new calibers and I guess I just been seeing a lot about Hornady info nothing on any others I need to find reloaded forum for good load info

Bro, I'm not exactly sure you know what you're looking for. Or you're asking the question a bit wrong. For me, I take your "600 and up" comment as anywhere from 600 to infinity. You did not say from about 600 to XXX yards. 300 RUM is an excellent hunting round although I do agree it might be overkill for whitetails at shorter ranges. However, the ranges you claim are rather longer than they are shorter. You want something to use for long range plinking as well. Well guess what buddy, you can reach well over 1000 yards with that RUM. A 6.5 creedmoor will effectively kill deer to 400 to 500 yards and I'm sure even further. The question is, is your ammo consistent enough and do you have enough training to take such an ethical shot?
You also talk about bullet selection but something tells me you actually mean factory ammo variety/availability. If that's the case, I would rather handload and try to get very low SDs & ES with great accuracy if I was going to be shooting at critters at 600 and we'll beyond.

Your kinda limiting your options by wanting it to double duty.

6.5 Creedmoor is a bit light for 600 yards killing in a sporting fashion in my opinion.

6.5PRC is an option.

300PRC obviously covers both but then your info another big magnum.

Since you reload maybe look at something like a 7mm Sherman short or 7mm SAUM.

Both are solid long distance cartridges with milder recoil yet excellent power for hunting.

It depends on what you believe to be an ethical threshold for energy needed to ethically harvest an animal. The right hot hand loads in 6.5 creedmoor can carry plenty of energy for killing deer sized game at the ranges you’re looking at, but factory ammo is too anemic for real long distance work IMHO

PRC if hunting is going to be your primary focus, don't worry about bullet selection, by this time next year there will be more then you want to choose from. I like the CM but I agree that for hunting it starts to bleed off too much energy at 600-800 yards. I have always been of the thought to go larger than I need for hunting. There are a lot of variables that can effect the bullet in flight to the animal, if you make a bad shot on a piece of steel and just nick it no big deal its still a hit but that is a different story on an animal.

The 6.5prc seems like a twin to the 6.5x284, and the x284 has been dropping large animals from absurd ranges for a long time. I see the prc in my future.

If it were me, and you are going to reload......

I would get a 6.5 PRC.

Pushes 140gr. bullets easily 200+ fps faster than the Creed more. With not much more recoil.
The Creed more would save some bucks in start up though. But the pros out way the cons in favor of the PRC.

Gennerally I want a thousand foot pounds of energy and the manufactures recommended minimum velocity for expansion of the round (couldn't find it on the VLD but generally 1,800 fps is the low end). The hottest load I could find for the 6.5 C was 2,700 fps for the 140s and using the mobile app MY max range for large game with that bullet/muzzle velocity is 600m (656 yards) for a thousand foot pounds and just short of 600m but just short for velocity. Again, I'm not arguing how dead your bull is or that other people don't do more more, just for me those are MY minimums for MY opinion of ethical shots for ME.

I’d like to point out the following stats:

- energy at muzzle for .45 ACP = 355 ft lbs
- energy at muzzle for .44 magnum = 767 ft lbs

Too bad one cannot dispatch an elk at point blank range with a .45 or a .44

Judging from the way you talk you are probably posting from your moms basement and the last time you killed something it was by applying peanut butter to a trap. Are you just here to try and stir up emotion to beat off too or to actually contribute something?

It’s not my theory, it’s what I feel is ethical. As I said, the elk looks very dead, done correctly, it’s a great kill and probably an awesome story. I am not here to impose my personal standards on anyone else for minimum gun, I just stated my standard for the OP to take or leave as he sees fit.

Running out of steam? My 260, which is a very slightly faster 6.5 Creedmoor, shows 1204ftlbs of energy at 600 and still going at 1997fps. How much energy are you proposing you need to take a heart/lung shot on a thin skinned, North American whitetail deer? I kill deer frequently with a 100gn projectile going 330fps.

Arrows kill animals very differently than bullets.

2,700 came off of Berger’s site and only used as an example of what my ethical limits would be with that data. Yep, no experience with 6.5 C, that’s irrelevant to 1k ft/# or 1,800 FPS. Minimum velocity is bullet specific, could be higher could be lower.

Like I said, I’m not here to impose my standards on anyone. Not sure why there is so much butt hurt about what I think with no real explications going around for other ways to determine the max effective range of a weapon.

Never those two, I do .260 which is stupid close to 6.5 C and I wouldn’t recommend it for large-ish animals past 600m...as I said in my first post which started this.
