To brake or not to brake?? 6.5 Creedmoor

I have a Rem 5R I am considering rebarreling to a GAP 6.5 Creedmoor.... my question is on a 6.5 Creedmoor how necessary is a brake to be able to see bullet impact. I put one on my 308, love it...works great, easier to see target... sucks if I use it to hunt.

I realize I should use my deer rilfe to hunt and a competition rifle to shoot matches, but I was considering have a dual purpose rifle because I love my setup just looking to change caliber. For hunting I prefer no brake so I don't blow my ears out .... I am new to long range competition... I see pics of guys competing with a brake and some without.... looking for some advice with the 6.5 Creedmoor

I had my barrel threaded with thread protector but never installed a brake. Don't feel the need for one. I can spot hits with out. My next barrel I might not have it threaded.

I'd brake. I can call all of my own impacts and watch hits on animals as close as 200yds. I've got a badger mini fte and for me the shooter on hunts it doesn't blow my ears out. My hunting partners however. ..

Damn government is always talking about the safety concerns for hearing loss, but make it difficult to protect your hearing through the use of a suppressor by all the crap you have to go through to get it. Every rifle shooter should go through the trouble to get one and to prove the point. They still live in that fucked up mind set that people want them to silently go around assassinating others. At least that's what they sell the ignorant non shooters of this country so they can keep it the way it is now. Still living in the cave days.

Slightly OT: what are the thoughts of users of this quick-attach system? It would seem to offer both, interchangeably, and perhaps the barrel could be threaded and "thread-covered" (or is indexing too much of a critical issue?).

You think you have to jump through hoops to get a suppressor, consider yourself lucky you can get one at all. Up here in Canada we can't get them at all, no concealed carry etc etc etc. I can never see this changing in my lifetime. You want to talk about still living in the cave days... and that cave is getting cold, we have had snow already.

Definitely braked and hopefully suppressed. I have a plain 24" .260 and it's nowhere near as fun to shoot as my braked 26" .260. Last week I spent 3 days with a suppressor on the .260 shooting prairie dogs - simply amazing. Because you're not wearing hearing protection, you can naturally hear their calls and localize them. Then, the suppressor reduced the recoil enough that you often see hits (a brake will do the same). Suppressed, you can hear the hit on most of the < 300 shots, sounds like a baseball hitting a glove. That's some shooting porn. I'd get a TBAC 30CB7 or CB9 (extra 10% group buy discount now)

If I do my part impacts are easy to see with my 260 with no brake.

I shoot most matches fully on 10-14 power and don't have issues seeing impacts. At 500 and beyond on max 18x I can still easily watch my impacts.

with a good shooting position you shouldn't need a brake on a 6.5, for those other times when you vcan't get into a good position a brake makes life a lot easier.

That's assuming that the delay doesn't increase. Seems to take a year now, who knows how much it will increase.

Don't you just love how "bureaucracy" is used to control access to perfectly sensible items.

The Creedmoor recoil isn't bad at all but I know people who brake .243s. It's a personal choice. My Creedmoor doesn't have a brake but it weighs about 18 pounds too. If you want a brake then get one. Tough to tell you what will work for you. You can always get it without and if you find you want one then get it put on. Not a bad process and doesn't usually take long to do.

Thank you for all of the input.... I have thought about going suppressed also... I already have a thread on suppressor... it's decent but its no thunderbeast. I would like to have the option which is why initally even with my 308 I considered going threaded so I can run suppressed, brake, or no brake. I was told it's an issue taking brake on and off because it will mess with the timing etc. is that an issue? So far I never removed mine bc its really accurate and didn't want to screw it up. I have a badger thruster on my 308 right now. I have been really happy with it, other than when deer hunting. Soon it will become my 6.5...


When you suppress and remove a thread on and reattach it... in theory is the gun still zeroed. Running suppressed the only issue is fitting in my bag, unless I can take the suppressor on and off. I know this has already been a huge topic of discussion.. just trying to understand options.
