To Ion-bond bolt or not???

Re: To Ion-bond bolt or not???

There's another interesting discussion going on about bolt coatings going on HERE involving the use if Cerakote's Micro Slick.
It'd be interesting to hear back from those who've tried either or both, to get opinions on corrosion resistance, as well as what else the treatments improved or made a mess out of.

Re: To Ion-bond bolt or not???

Did you have him Melonite any Remington bolts? I ask, due to the temps involved in Meloniting, because Rem bolts are brazed together. That & I don't know at what temps any damage might occur to any heat treatment in a Rem bolt.
Though it surely would be nice to have a bolt done this way. After seeing how Tennifer has held up over the decades, I'm sold on it/Melonite.

Re: To Ion-bond bolt or not???

I had my M2008 Action+Bolt IonBonded. It was actually reccommended by Marty, who advised not to melonite the action or bolt due to the heat involved. Just got the rifle put together. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but it is performing flawlessly while dry firing.

Re: To Ion-bond bolt or not???

I just got my barreled action back from Ionbond. I had the bolt coated as well. The bolt runs extremely smooth in the action right now, but like mkollman, I have not had a chance to shoot her yet. FYI, I went with the FDE on the barreled action and the Black Diamond for the bolt. That was on recommendation of Daryl Lewis, the head of the firearms division of Ionbond. As for the FDE, I've been told the Barrett MRAD is actually coated with the FDE Ionbond. I can confirm the colors are the same. And I am extremely happy with Ionbond so far.

Here's a photo. The scope is cerakoted, the action, barrel, base, rings, magazine, bolt knob and aluminum fore end of the AI AXCS are all Iondonded in FDE. The bolt is Diamond Black.
