I just acquired a Marlin XT22VR. I need a scope ,rings and base. I have the scope picked out (a Falcon Menace 4-14 FFP). My questions are should I spend the extra and get the illuminated reticle or save the extra $50 for ammo. And even though this scope has 26 mils of adjustment ,should I get a 20 MOA base?

Re: To or Not to .

doesn't hurt to get the base and put it on while you are at it on a clean slate.

it's nice to have it there if / when you need it. plus it adds "the look" and option to add rail mounted ACI, etc.

ill. reticle, unless you are going to do any critter hunting at night or have bad enough eyesight that you need the extra "glow", i'd put the 50.00 toward ammo.

if your budget allows the expendable 50.00, get the ill reticle.

actually screw the ill. reticle and put the 50.00 toward the base that will be more useful.

Check out DIP bases, they offer alot for a little $.

Re: To or Not to .

Actually I will most likely be able to do both the base and the Ill reticle. Was just wondering if the adjustment range of the scope would necessitate the +MOA scope base.Max range I can shoot here is 275 yards . And is the illuminated reticle really worth the extra money on a scope ?

Re: To or Not to .

I have a Falcon Menace on my XT-22VR and can honestly say I've never wished for an illuminated reticle. I used the factory installed scope bases also.

What type of shooting will you be doing with it? Target, hunting, varmint extermination?

I've used mine after dark a few times for pest control and never had an issue. If I had the choice to make, I'd go with the non illuminated version and put the rest of the money toward a better stock.

Re: To or Not to .

Mainly for target/plinking .But may be used for small pest control as well .What size rings did you end up using ?And which Falcon Menace are you using?

Re: To or Not to .

I am using the 4-14 EMD version in Leupold Mark 4 steel rings, medium height. The factory scope covers just touch the barrel with them. Not a big deal to me, as long as I remember to remove them instead of just flipping them open.
