Today was a good day...AE arrived

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Congrats! Great choice, I am interested to see what you can do with this once you have some time on it.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Once I get my reloading bench cleared off and some time to crank out some ammo, I am going to see what I can come up with for 175's in Winchester brass and RE15.

I am also going to give the 208's a try. I have some RE17 here and with a MORTA mag or two I can load them long and let em run.

I think it would be a kick to ring steel at 1500 with a 20" .308

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

John -

What's your take on the 155's (Scenars or SMK Palma 2156) out of this rifle? Why would you choose the 175's over the 155's?

I'm assuming it's all about the wind deflection...

Thanks,
Josh

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Mainly because my 700 doesn't like the 155 Scenars at less than 200. The last time I tested them I was getting tighter groups at 200 than at 100. Also I had to drive the 155s hard to get them to perform. I may revisit them with this rifle, but the 175 SMK is just a great performer. I really like to find one load and stick with it. Then worry about working on me. There was one month awhile back when I realized that every range trip was "load development". I didn't do any "shooter development".

I'm guilty of this. Good point.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Very nice groups! Once you fine-tune your loads, you're going to have a consistent sub-.5 MOA setup.

I'd be interested in knowing your impressions after you've used the Razor scope for awhile.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I'm diggin' the photos, those last two look awesome! Slight hint of Miami Vice perhaps? There's something electric about sunsets in the city on the rooftop, reflecting the cool tones of twilight against the clouds and concrete...makes for a great backdrop, but generally inadvisable for most of us when we go to photograph our rifles

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I was starting to get worn down my the end of the day, so some of the groups were not that steller.

Conditions were 77*F, sunny, 5-10 mph full value wind.

Still it got me the data that I was looking for.

In this rifle Hornady 168gr AMAX Custom is a smoking performer I fired four five shot groups and the smallest was under 1/4" at 100 yards (center to center). The largest was under 1/2" but then had one shot drop out of the group. I am betting it was me that caused it since I was really getting a bit tired at that point, but it will require another box before I can make any definite estimate.

Prvi sucks, but I think we all knew that. It struggled to stay MOA and had several the would jump out of the group.

Hornady 168gr Match was just behind the 168 Amax. This surprised me a little. I would have expected their "match" ammo to shoot better than the "custom" stuff. The difference wasn't great though and they might switch places on a different day.

The real surprise was the 110gr Hornady TAP. The muzzle blast was very noticeable. More so than any of the other loads. I could actually see the muzzle flash in the scope in broad daylight. Accuracy was acceptable for a defensive load, but isn't going to cut it as a match load. Even at 100 yards it showed a 1" wind drift.

I did the velocity testing from the Rock BR rest. The actual accuracy testing was from the ground with bipod and rear bag.

I fired the groups "round robin" but I think that actually caused a problem because anything that followed the Prvi was not as tight as when fired alone. Also the gusting wind prevented me from firing slowly. I had to try to crank off all five while the wind conditions were the same. While at 100 yards wind is not going to be a "hit or miss" it can add 1/4 or more to group sizes. This is one of the reason I am not actually posting the sizes.

This was not a definitive accuracy test. It was more to give me a chance to see how the AE MkII performed with a variety of ammunition. With the exception of the Prvi 168gr Match the AE performed admirably.

I am still waiting on some Black Hills 175gr Match and hopefully I can get ahold of some Corbon match. That will cover just about anything you would use as "duty ammunition" in the AE.

One interesting fact is that the 20" AE produced similar velocities to my 26" barreled 700. In fact my 175gr handloads (43gr RE15) were about 30fps faster in the AE.

I will have the numbers for the velocities in a minute.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I only took velocities for five rounds out of each box, so it may or may not be representative, but it should give you a general idea.

Again the environmentals were:

77*F, 54% Humidity, 29.52 inHg (absolute)

The chrony was 10' from the muzzle and all shots were fired with the muzzle break on.

Prvi 168gr Match:
Average - 2537.2
Standard Deviation - 15.74
Extreme Spread - 35

Hornady 168 Match:
Average - 2624.8
Standard Deviation - 15.51
Extreme Spread - 43

Hornady 168 Amax:
Average - 2620.4
Standard Deviation - 8.44
Extreme Spread - 21

Hornady 110 TAP:
Average - 3181.4
Standard Deviation - 13.81
Extreme Spread - 38

The 168 Amax had the smallest Standard Deviation which supports what I was seeing on the target.

I wish I could find some factory Hornady 178gr Amax loads locally. I would love to see what they look like.

I will add that I don't do a lot of "testing" like this. I prefer to just choose an appropriately accurate load and then concentrate on the shooting. "Testing" spends a lot of ammo for no real skill improvement.

I always have to end the day with something productive.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

No, I have not tried the 168 TAP red box in the AE yet.

I just ordered a couple boxes of the 178 Superformance, so I am looking forward to giving that a go.

Now that I have 100 fire formed cases I am going to see what kind of nice 175gr load I can come up with for it.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Have you tried any of the Lapua 155 Scenars in the AE yet? I've had very good success with those in the AW and AE rifles for paper punching.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

SRT Supply had my configuration in stock so as soon as I provided payment and FFL info it went out the door.

I have training all this week and a jeep that needs the transmission pulled. As soon as I get through all that I should have some time on the reloading bench.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I ran some that I had laying about for the 700. It was 43gr of RE15 pushing a 175 smk. They worked very well.

I just finished getting the die setup to crank out some for the AE. I also have some new Winchester brass here. I may be able to get to it later this week, but I am rushing to get this Jeep transmission fixed so I can go shoot this weekend. I want to take the AE out and run the local match with it.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Congratulations with a very nice setup!

That (ouch!) reminded me how much i need (well..want) a .308/7.62x51 again. I have been considering the AI or the TRG-22, but since I have a chassis already I am partial to the AI.
May I ask if you got quotes for both the AE and the AW, and if so, can you say anything about the price difference?

John - out

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

LW - sweet stick! And nice shooting. I'm interested to see what 175 SMK loads you end up with.

Its also interesting to see the migration to 20" barrels when all the conventional wisdom seemed to be 24-26" was required for for 1000 yd+.

You're generally looking at a price difference of $2200 between the AE and AW before adding options, depending on model.

For specifics, take a look at http://72.17.147.19/accintlsrt/ACCPRICING.htm

And PM any time for a quote on a specific build

Since the 20" AE is clocking 30fps more than my 26" 700 it would actually be a better 1K rifle than the 26" 700.

However like many others 1000 yard shooting is only a fraction of my total shooting time. Most of my shooting is from 300-800 yards.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

That is a very nice rifle. I have been salivating over the AW for several years now, might be time to start saving the pennies for it. Life is not getting any longer. Congrats on snagging such a beautiful "wife"!

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I have some black hills on the way and I just cranked out some 175's and 178gr handloads. I am contemplating shooting the local match this weekend. We will see how it goes.

Once the Black Hills ammo gets here I am going to do some scope tracking drills and some other fun.
