Tonight's WTF entry. Muzzle device WELDED directly onto a barrel. No pin. Illegal SBR made in the process. "Gunsmith" refuses to accept responsibility

Pics of high quality "gunsmithing" available in link as well. Basically a perfectly good rifle was transformed into a Hadji DIY job picked up some distance away from some Iraqi or Syrian slag pile left by a Hellfire strike...

How does shitbirds like this end up in our respectable industry? And this is coming from a guy who fully intends to start his own rifle building shop and gun store probably well before 'retirement' (That word is a blasphemy to me as well. Ain't no such thing as retirement unless I don't have any mobility left.)

We all know those sporting goods outfitters that carry hunting bows almost always have a policy in which if some asshat dry fires a bow, he just bought that bow, right?... If that was my rifle, somebody from that camp is going to be reimbursing it's full cost down to the packing material that the gun originally came in, and even if I have to spend a hefty sum out of my own pockets for attorney fees and to initiate a long courtroom battle, I'll put up with it, because this is just fucking insulting beyond words...

I learned the hard way that you really have to watch out with local gunsmiths. They can easily mess up a job you give them to do, even the easy ones. When they do mess it up they will never take responsibility for it. I will never let a local gunsmith touch any of my rifles anymore.

I always ask to inspect any work they might have waiting to be picked up.
One smith I was looking to have him build me a rifle hands me his own. Looked like an R700 in a McMillan. Either his action/barrel was crooked, or Mcmillan sent him a bent stock because there was more barrel channel on one side than the other.
I just said, this looks nice, asked his turn around time, and said I'll be back in a couple months and left. Obviously, I did not have him build me anything, and just bought an MPA BA 6.5 instead.

Always ask to see work if you are doing anything local and not using a vendor here!

If you want your money back tell him that he has 24 hours to give you a full refund or you will call the ATF and report him for illegal manufacture of an NFA weapon.

They WILL find him culpable as they specifically say that spot weld alone is not enough to “permanently affix” the muzzle device.

Maybe not but it appears that a reputable gunsmith may be able to fix all of that at the cost of some barrel length, laughter, and showing to the shop guys? Maybe not though.

Place is about an hour and a half from me. Fairly nice range, really nice people. Locals seem to respect the gunsmithing. “Max’s gun repair LLC” posted a lengthy Facebook response to the complaints after the dude posted on every forum and board. Three sides to every story I suppose. ??‍

The locals are probably all his inbred cousins. Take MK20s advice and demand a full refund because a refund will be a lot cheaper for him than court.
And FYI for the future its much better to spend a fucks bucks on shipping and send to one of the many vetted professional gunsmiths on this site than dealing with a local fuckface hack because it seems more convenient at the time because you can drink coffee and listen to his bullshit stories.

If the OP asked for a Pin and Weld, that is what the gunsmith should have done.... certainly not the gunsmiths interpretation of the law.
