Rifle Scopes Tract toric uhd

I'm on the fence between the tract toric-uhd-30mm-4-20x50 and the vortex viper pst g2 5-25 ffp mrad.

Both are close enough in price that it's a wash there.

I looked though a g2 on sat but was the Noah version and only in store. I liked the clicks and the overall feel but was wondering how they stack up together?

I like the warranty on the vortex. Whereas the warranty on the tract only covers manufacturers defects.
I will be using it for moa matches out to 600 and prs to 1200 on a rem 700 in 308.

The xtr 2 is an option but I've heard the clicks arnt as nice and clarity isnt up there

I have no experience with the Tract.
The PST II is an excellent, entry level optic as is the XTR II.
It is my understanding that there has been some tweaking of the coatings on the XTR II since their initial release, though I do not know that for certain.
What I will say is both the PST and XTR have a reputation for tracking.
When it comes to durability, the XTR enjoys a better reputation.
The Tract apparently uses German Schott glass.
Both Burris and Vortex have excellent warranties.

Frozen, I have a PST II 5-25x50 and the Tract 4-20x50 and I've also had the XTR II 4-20x50. They are all excellent scopes at close to the same price point, the XTR II has been out the longest, the PST II and the Tract Toric both came out last year. If the decision were by turrets alone the XTR II has a better feel IMO, a little more distinct than the PST II and Toric. If the decision were to be made on reticle alone, I prefer non-obtrusive Christmas tree reticles and the EBR-2C in the Vortex is a great reticle, the XTR II has multiple reticle options with standard mil-dot, SCR (.2 mil hash but no tree) and Horus (busy tree style) while the Toric only comes in one reticle flavor right now in a standard .5 mil hash (clean) reticle. Illumination wise, the Toric is daytime bright, the PST II 5-25 isn't really visible in daytime nor is the XTR II. Finally, if the decision were to be solely made on glass, the XTR II and Toric exhibit thicker CA while the PST II handles that aberration the best; however, resolution wise the Toric wins hands down while the PST II suffers some in contrast. A couple other notes, the Toric has locking turrets so if you're concerned about them being bumped and getting adjusted without your knowing the Toric might provide some comfort there, the Toris is the shortest scope in the bunch while being the heaviest, but not much more, so doubt you'd notice in real world. As for warranty, I'd recommend you contact Tract, they are a great startup company run by two guys who came from Nikon sport optics and my guess is they will take care of you, a quick call should rectify your concerns.

I have a Toric 30mm Mil-Mil, my first FFP scope, I like it a lot but haven't had it to the range yet.

I bought a Bushnell LRHSi 4.5-18x44 to compare (GAP pre-order) and I like it too.

I can't compare the glass too much, they are both very nice as far as I can tell without a more critical test.

I think they are both LOW scopes and a lot of the features are similar, in particular, the configuration of the 30mm tube with a big elevation dial and the similar side focus paralax with reticle illumination. The zero stop hardware seems similar too but I haven't gone so far as to take them apart side by side.

I think the Tract clicks are a bit nicer than the Bushnell but both are a lot better than I'm used to dealing with. The pull up locking knobs on the Tract were a selling feature for me, I like it.

I think they are both similar values if you get the GAP pre-order price. The Tract costs more but you get more features and the Schott glass.

I haven't compared to Vortex or Athlon scopes in that price range but I expect it to do well.

Flyer, I just compared the Toric and the LRHS side by side this past Saturday and the LRHS has a more pleasing CA but both scopes are up there in regard to resolution, the LRHS is longer and lighter but the Toric offers 50mm vs 44mm objective. If you like "plain" reticles the Toric has a nice .5 mil hash reticle, both have daylight bright illumination that can help when on low magnification. One other thing to note is that the LRHS has what I would consider to be low profile turrets (which I prefer) while the Toric turrets are tall.

Like I said, I haven't done a critical test but I didn't spot any CA on either although I wasn't looking at bright white targets.

The Toric knobs are a bit tall but their width makes them seem less. I have a Minox with capped target turrets and they really stand out although they are probably similar in height.

I should try to get those three together to compare and a Nitrex TR2 because my Minox has Schott glass and my Nitrex is like an off brand Weaver Super Slam which I believe is another LOW scope with Asian glass (and nice low profile pop-up locking turrets).

Oh, I got the Tenabrex scope caps and the MK Machine 3D printed throw lever from Tract. They are nice.

I'm cheap so paying $60 for caps hurt a little. I'm not sure it's a great value compared to cheapo Butler Creek but they are much nicer and you don't have to measure, read catalogs and guess to get the right fit.

I wish scope manufacturers would figure it out with a few decent brands of scope cap and share the info so you could just order...

I can't speak to the PST G2 5-25 vs the Toric UHD, but I have the PST G2 3-15 to compare to my Toric UHD 4-20. I pretty much agree with @wjm308 on everything, but I'll add that the Toric carries its 6 extra ounces extremely well - I'd swear it was lighter. I also like its turret zero process and zerostop adjustment better than the Vortex. Turret feel is better on the Vortex, but the Toric is clear and bright at 20x magnification and I only get 15x from my Vortex with less clarity, so the Toric is a worthy competitor. I'm considering getting a 2nd one for my CZ455.

@flyer I bought Tenabrex scope caps for a different scope I have, and $60 for the set is a steal, relatively speaking. Pretty sure I paid $60 for the objective cap and $40 for the eyepiece cap. :-/

Thanks for the replies. I have some time to research more. I really want the tract but something is holding me back. Both look great aesthetically. I like that the viper has 5x more power. I use a crossfire 2 6-18 now and do ok so any I choose should be a big step up

Well, I'm not sure what a Viper is.

I know the Razor scopes are Japanese, LOW probably, with 34mm tube.

I have heard the Razor glass is on a different level than the Viper and the Toric 30mm glass is in the Razor class.

If you can compare between a Viper and Razor and you think the difference is worth the price, the Toric might be what you're looking for.

I have also been curious of how the Toric compares optically to other known scopes in it's respective price level, your insights are appreciated The Toric seems to offer great glass for the price point, but how would the Toric compare to more expensive scopes like the SSHD 5-20, Mark 5 (either mag range), Razr gen 2, etc? I will be in the market for a new scope around the beginning of next year, and the Mark 5 5-25 and Razor gen 2 4.5-27 have been at the top of my list. If I could get two Toric's for about the same price as one of the others I would be stoked, as long as the optical performance is there. Optical quality is the top of my list when scope shopping because my eyes fatigue quickly behind a scope, being a welder for a living doesn't help either. Any feedback would be great.

The way I see it, the trade off with the Toric is it has only a 5x zoom range, the 30mm tube limits the internal elevation adjustment somewhat (not a problem outside ELR shooting) and the reticle isn't the latest and greatest Christmas tree that all the PRS types want.

Those things didn't matter too much to me...

Hi Jason, I am finalizing a review of a bunch of $1k optics and the Toric is one of them. The Toric has some issues with CA, but outside of that and turrets that are true but have some wiggle I am quite impressed with it optically. I’ll send you a PM

I would like to see if you can photograph that CA, I haven't been able to see any violet fringing at any magnification with my Toric.

Mine gives an image cleaner than my Vanguard Endeavor ED 10x42 binoculars which have just a hint of CA at the edge of field.

I can't say definitively that my Toric has zero CA but it's certainly not an issue.

Photographing CA and seeing CA with your eyes can be tricky because every optical system has CA and the lens from a camera/phone can exacerbate what is actually seen with your eye. Many shooters don't see CA and I often say if you don't see it, don't go looking for it. I am wrapping up my review on multiple scopes of which the Toric was one so will shed some more light (no pun intended) on the issue there.

Saw a leupold lrp today. Wasnt impressed with the turrets. Didn't line up. A Nikon bx1000 they had there seemed better. My favorite was a sig whiskey 5 for the turrets.
