Does anyone know where I can get a travel indicator magnetic base that attaches to the ways so I can indicate against the tool carriage.. This is not the base that has a movable neck but just a base with a dovetail so I can attach a travel plunger type indicator? I have looked all over the net with no luck.. We used them on the lathes in School and they are very good for accurate carriage movement..

Thanks for your help..

Re: travel indicator base?

Starrett makes a good magnetic base. Put a 1" flatback indicator on it and have at it. Personally I use Starrett, Federal, Mitutoyo of Browne & Sharp indicators. Mostly Federal. The ones I use have a 1" travel, .100" per revolution face with a small revolution counter 0 - 10. ballpark of a 3" face.

Re: travel indicator base?

i have found the mighty-mag bases to be better than the no-name chinese enco magnetic bases. i keep a 1" travel and a 2" travel chinese dial indicator set up on mighty-mags for distance travel. i find the cheap dial indicators are fine for that. for checking run out, i like to use something a bit nicer.

edit: i am also not making money off of what i do so i can't justify expensive indicators for everything. i will spend the money where i feel it is needed though.

How do you attach a flatback indicator to the base?
