TRG 22/42 caliber choice - 300WM or 308WIN?

I am accumulating funds for a SAKO TRG 22/42, and still undecided between these two calibers. The local range is only up to 300 yards, so for most my shooting, either round should suffice. 308WIN is cheaper to shoot, but I already have a couple in this caliber. The only concern I have after reading 300WM is the shorter barrel life - what's the scoop here? 4000-5000 rds and one has to re-barrel? Does SAKO barrel fare better? Any first hand experience appreciated!

If your max range is 300 yards I'd just get a .308, unless you figure you'll be shooting other places over 800-1000 frequently. Cheaper to shoot, less recoil, longer barrel life. Now if you just want a .300wm as you mentioned since you already have a couple .308's that's great too.

Not sure about barrel life I'm sure others can comment, but from what I've read 4000-5000 rounds out of a .300wm seems VERY optimistic. Now if you were reloaded and knew you were not going to shoot long distances you could easily make up some slower loads that would save the barrel and reduce recoil.

I went through building a big heavy .308 and frankly was disappointed. My M2008 came out to be like 17 lbs in .308, and didn't shoot significantly better than my 10 lbs LTR does. So for me if I was going to get something built that's going to be more of a heavy gun I'd want more oomph than the .308, which is my motivation for the .300wm (.338 would be fun but most guys can't drive them or afford to shoot them).

Now if you want to complicate things even more there's a limited run of .260 TRG's being done as well by Alex at EuroOptic. It's ballistics are better than the .300wm as far as drop/drift goes, if you are only looking to target shoot, that's a might nice option as well.

I have a TRG22 and I shoot out to 1,000 yards in comps. It is a great choice, and with the limited distance you have to shot, the 300 win mag will just tear targets down. ( that is the experience we had at the last comp).
I also got the opportunity to look down a worn out .300 Win Mag barrel that I guy switched off of his AW. The rifling was almost worn smooth for about the first 7", and he had around 3,000 shots through it.
Magnums are loud, hit harder down range, and on the shooter, do you really need it???
Thats why this shooting hobby is so addicting, you might not be happy until you try it.

Go with the trg-22 and dont look back.It will do everything you want it to. Less recoil cheeper to shoot. I've had mine for 3 years now and have pretty much shelved my other tactical rifles.

If you already have a .308, then why not get the .300WM? Maybe you can only shoot 300 yards now, but what about the future? I bought a TRG 42 .300WM so I can use it as a beanfield rifle for whitetails.

As far as shooting out the barrel, just re-tube it down the road. Don't know how often you will shoot, but 3,000 rounds will take me a while to go through. Good luck.

.300WM with the Sako muzzle break is negligable as far as recoil. You could shoot that thing all day long without discomfort!
What would be cool would a a Sako TRG 42 switch barrel setup for .308 and .300WM!!! You would have the best of both worlds!

I have a .308 and a .300WM. I will say that I love both and they both have their positives and minuses!

Since you already have .308's then I would suggest getting a .300WM.

2 different animals. How can that possibly be done with tha same receiver/bolt face? Think about it.

You would have to have a seperate bolt and/or bolt face and barrel.
It can be done but it would not be cheap, but it sure would be cool!

The M24 is an example of it being done!

I agree with Will, if you really want something different than .308.

Regarding the switch barrel. You can order, supposedly, a bolt with a 308 bolt bace for the TRG-S. These were available in 270 Win and stuff like that. This bolt would fit a TRG-42 as far as I know. Now you headspace your 308 barrel for that bolt, and you can switch them out. Of course you would need some way to feed it, I'm guessing you could modify an AICS long mag to hold a 308 round, and have plenty of room to seat the bullet out far. And I just happen to know someone who is making a kit for the TRG-42 to take AICS long mags, haha. Good luck,

I have a 260 TRG on order and plan to learn how to reload as well.

Read Zak Smith's article on long range shooting. The 260 Remington is his #1 recommendation if you reload, especially if you already have a .308.

I bought an action wrench and barrel vice so I could run my TRG as a switch barrel. I removed the .308 barrel and sent it to my barrel maker so he could copy the profile and headspace. Now I shoot the .260 for F-Class Open and the .308 for F-Class Std (F T/R). Both are used for hunting.

Seriously learn to reload, but first call Alex at Euro Optics and get your name on the list. These rifles should be in by the end of March and it's first come first served. Alex only ordered a limited amount of these rifles directly from Sako. These are TRG 22s from the factory with a .260 bbl. Don't delay call now.

Best advice in the thread. All the fun and none of the pain or cost... unless you really need the downrange energy of the WM. Plug a 142 SMK @ 2800 FPS into JBM and compare it to *any* 308 load.

Was told my George at GAPrecision that they do it all the time.

Price is $665.00 for everything, they supply barrel with the same contour. Not a bad deal at all.

I would go with the TRG42 in 300 WidowMaker.I load 210 Bergers with mine with great results.Even though you can only shoot 300yds now,Its always cool to have an Application that can reach way out past 1000M.GoodLuck!

I would like to have a 260/6.5 class shooter, but I have yet to learn reloading, so 260 is limited for me. I love 6.5x65 swedes but very few modern rifles are made in that caliber. I think I will get my hand on reloading soon!

Accuracy is sub 0.4moa for both @100m. Based on my scores, it is hard to pick between them out to 600m but beyond that (out to 1200m+) the .260 really romps away.

You could buy .260 ammunition and save the brass (or do the same with a 6.5 Creedmoor) and get into reloading slowly, once you have enough brass saved to make it worthwhile...

As far as barrel life, I'm at 8500 in my TRG22 in.308 and it still shoots half moa.

It's not really surprising though. TRGs are a great platform all round and with a quality switch barrel and good handloads I would expect no less.

The 26" match grade Maddco barrel (incl profile, crown, chamber, h/s, bore lap) cost $750AUD

OK - I did a partial trade and has a TRG22 on its way to my dealer. Now a local guy is offering me a TRG42 in 300 Win Mag for $2300. With this price, I get the rifle (shot 200+ rounds), the factory brake, factory bipod, factory mount, and three magazines

Am I crazy to buy a second TRG in one week???? Or am I insane not to jump on the deal??? This is killing me!

Sounds like a perfect opportunity, to have your dream of both rifles.
If this was me I would buy both (borrowing money from my savings), shoot them, and in a short period you will have the answer to your original question. Then sell the extra one here.

+1! Call me if you need some 300WM TRG ammo. I've got a load with the 190 SMK that shoots 1/2 MOA in several TRG's we've tested them in.

Already have .308, seems kind of silly to do another one. AND, if spending the money for the TRG, then do something different.

I was just debating this with another hide member on why you would spend good money on a nice rifle, but the "lowly" .308? Dont get me wrong, I LOVE my .308, but its in a plan jane wrapper, Rem 700 SPS.
If Im gonna spend good money on a rifle, its gonna be in a "not so common" caliber....300WM, 7MM Rem Mag, etc..

I understand why people spend good money on rifle and chamber it for the .308, I just personally wouldnt do it. I would never be the type of person that spent $6000 (AI for example) and it be chambered for a .308


Edit: Before any of you guys that own a high dolar rifle chambered in .308 take offense, let me clarify, I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WOULD DO IT< JUST SAYING I WOULDNT DO IT, THATS ALL!

For my TRG 42 300 win mag I have used Black hills 190 gr and HSM 190 gr. I went just with the HSM because of price and it performed just as well as the BH. I have been loading for the TRG 22. However, before I started reloading for it I used BH 175gr and HSM 175gr. I found the HSM to perform just as well as the BH.

Jamie, thanks again. The guy who sold me the TRG41 also has a whole case of HSM 190 which I can get at 90% snipercentral price. I will call him up next month after recovery from the bleeding. He also has reloading equipment. He basically is getting out of long range shooting after bad result from neck neurosurgery

USAammo's 308 is certainly worth trying at that price

That was a steal, you did very good. At one point, I had all three TRG's (308, 300wm & 338lp) but, the only one I kept was 300wm. It does it all. I've shot matchs with it. I've hunted with it. I've plinked with it. I love my TRG42 in 300wm and will probably never sell it. Incredibly accurate and with 210 Bergers at 2950fps (right at 3.6" w/rl-25), you can hold your own with the 338 crowd at 1/2 the cost per pop and half the percussion.
