Made it to 1000 yesterday had 2 5 shot right just a hair under 1 MOA with the 43 H4350 and 139 Scenar. I shot up old test ammo and the mix resulted in 1.25 -1.5 MOA 5 shot. The new bullet load combo that really did well for me yesterday @ 600 was the Berger 130 VLD loaded in the lands with 43.8 H4350. Damned if I didn't shoot them up @ 600 only had .040 shorter gave those a go at 1000 nothing great but they were not great at 600. To get there I needed 25.75 with the 139 Scenars and 26.25 with the 130 VLD's.

I tried them early on with H4831, H4350 and Varget they shot fine at 100-300 but not so great past so I stopped working with them, I passed on anything that would not shoot 1/2" MOA @ 600. That's not to say they can't be made to work, I'm WAS in a hurry so I could shoot instead fiddle F'ing with load development and so far it has not been as easy as I expected. It was far easier with the 308 22 and 42.

We went back to the range yesterday and shot the smk's at 300 yards. It was clear blue skies with very calm conditions. I had 15 rounds loaded and the 1, 5 shot group that I fired had 4 in just over an inch with 1 called flyer way out of that group. My father in law, who had never fired the rifle before had fired a 10 shot string that had 8 out of 10 inside 2 inches, and the other 2 within another inch. I'll load some more of the same and will get back there this weekend. The loads were identical to the ones I shot before with the only exception being the powder charge was 42 gr. of H4350 instead of 43 gr. The oal was 2.887 and still using the CCI BR primers.

I made it to the range this past weekend for my 2nd outing with the TRG, this time with 123 Scenars and H4350. The results were not bad, though I was bedeviled by the 4 in, one out, phenomenon that comes and goes. Load? Shooter? Most likely me, the shooter. The particulars:

For my rig, the stats point to 44.5 gn, or thereabouts, for this bullet, based on group size, ES and SD. I'll explore this neighborhood more, +/- .2 gn.

I'm also intrigued by scattered reports of very good results using Hybrid 100V powder. Never have tried it, but now have a pound coming just for comparison.

Have not chronoed them yet LW. I'm confident enough they are going to be my final I ordered up 500 and 200 139 Scenars. I received today and will get them over chrono soon. If I thought wrong there will be 400 or so 130's for sale. It was between the 130's and 139 Scenars.

You mentioned you were loading the Berger 130s into the lands. How deep? Did they still fit in the mag?

2.940" is length in my rifle, I would guess light jam .015 the bullet needs to be lightly tapped out of barrel with cleaning rod at that length, and yes fits and feeds in magazine.

NOTE: New lot of 130's VLD's these are .016 shorter to ogive than last lot so no jamming. I found it hard to believe that much difference lot to lot but that's what it is.

I shot my second F-class match today (600 yds) with my TRG. The load I used was Lupua brass, CCI200 primer, 43.5gr H4350, 139 Scenar set .030 off the lands. Seemed to work pretty well. I scored 580-23x which is a significant improvement over last time (568-20x). I used the same load last time except Remington brass and set .007 off the lands.

Starting from my 100 yd zero, I dialed in 12.75 moa elevation and that put me in the 10 ring with my first sighter round.

Winds were a bit calmer this time, so that probably helped as well.

How are you accurately measuring your distance off the lands. I am new to reloading and am about to start loading up my Lapua Brass. Are you finding that the 142gr SMK performs best with about the same charge weight of H4350 as the Lapua 139gr Scenar?

I use a Hornady ogive guage to measure seating depth from the ogive instead of the metplat. This is much more accurate then measuring from just the metplat since the length from ogive to metplat can vary from bullet to bullet.

I had good results with the 142 SMK at 43.5gr of H4350 which has been my best load for the 139 Scenars as well. However, I also found that I could go a little hotter with the the 142s and still get tight groups where as the 139s did not seem to like being pushed any harder. Hogdon's load data lists mamximum charge with H4350 to be 44.5gr.

I took my brother to a farm we've done some groundhog hunting at, this evening. Once we set up I had him dry fire it a few times; he had not had a chance to fire the TRG yet. A hog came out between 325-350 yards and would not stand up. He cranked the NF up to 22 magnification and then nailed him about 1" under the ear as it was in a low sitting position facing sideways (low profile). Prior to this evenings hunt, I zeroed the rifle at 300 yards with a charge of 42 gr. of H4350, CCI BR2, 142 gr SMK with Lapua brass. OAL was 2.887. The groups at 300 off the bench are great. The SMK's are holding very well, my only problem is I do not have access to a range where I can test them further out. It was cool that the first critter we shot at was a head hit at that range.

I have the same problem. Only 100yd range available. I can shoot 600yd, but only for f-class matches, so I cant measure groups or test different loads.

The 142 SMks worked real well for me at 100yds. I may give them a try in an f-class match and see how they do there. The 139 Scenars have worked well at 600, but they are so damn expensive.

Beware that the ogive on this bullet is very far forward and on my AAC brand barrel, I am .040" or more into the lands when seated to 2.800". This ogive profile is basically unusable in my rifle without seating very far into the case and taking up a lot of capacity. This might not be a problem with Varget powder but probably is with H4350 or H4831.

i have shot the 140 amaxs with 36.0 grains of varget at the 2.80 col and have had 0 issues in two rifles. it is a GREAT shooting load in both rifles. ymmv

My mistake. I was referring to the 140SMK, not 140AMAX. AMAX is GTG at mag length.

I was quoted on the prior page so I'll throw in here. My .260 match load for the last approx 2 years (until my barrel was finally toast) used RL17 to push a 139 at 2900 even.

I have been trying some of the Nosler Custom 140s with 43.5 of H4350 seated to 2.870 @ 2770fps. Shot that load at a 1K match and I think the load was OK but the shooter was a little questionable. Anyone else tried the Nosler 140??

127 gr LRX bullet, best group so far (5 rounds 3/4" @ 200yds) was loaded .05 off lands with 42 gr H4350, 2850fps

Just a quick question if anyone is still reading this thread:
I found some Alliant reloader 17 on the shelf of my local gun store, I was going to get it, but noticed that it was manufactured in 2009. I know that gunpowder never really expires, but for the sake of precision shooting, I didn't know if it was optimal to have newer powder. As far as I could tell there was not sun damage to the label or container, but there was another container behind it that was made in the same year and the label was very miscolored from the sun. I didn't want to spend $30 for a lb of powder and then write it off due to sun damage having diminished the powder.
Would you buy the powder?
Any insight is appreciated.

Did a little load development today with the Varget and 140gn SMK's. This was the first time I'd ever shot the rifle and had to sight the scope in as well.
I tried, 37, 37.5, 38, 38.5, and 39. I honestly couldn't tell much of a difference, so I'm going to go with 38.0 and work on seating depth.
Here are the three groups I shot today after getting sighted in.
They are virtually all in the same area of the target, so I know that the rifle is a shooter =0).

After the second outing, the most accurate combo I've got with Varget is 140 gn SMK, Lapua brass, 38.0 gn Varget, and seated at an even 2.80

Guys, I seem to be the only one still posting on this thread, but I'm continually getting outstanding groups with the Varget. I haven't stretched this rounds legs out past 100 yet though.

I'd like to know if I should move to the H4350 or stay with the Varget?
Are y'all getting groups like this?
Does the grouping with the Varget fall off past 100 and that's why everyone recommends H4350?

I still read this thread even though my TRG is with SAC as we speak getting a new barrel/trued/etc. Mine shot ok but kept getting unexplained flyers and was not happy. Hopefully he will get some barrels in and get it finished before springtime.

I've been using my TRG .260 for the last year and a half for a variety of purposes - plinking, F-class, and field matches. I'm a little over 2K rounds now and just wondering if anyone has had to rebarrel the factory 260 barrel yet and how many rounds they got out of it?

This is not for the TRG barrel, but for a representative match barrel. In my experience, with moderate loads of H4350/H4831SC, over 4000 rounds. With hot RL17 loads, somewhere over 3000.

When I shot 1-2 less grains of H4350 for the same velocity I got long barrel life.
