TRG-22 Seating

Hi,
First post, new to this whole reloading thing and I wanted some confirmation on some of my measurements.

So I bought a RSCB precision mic and measured out my ogive distance using their dummy round and then measured the difference to the ogive distance on a factory loaded 168 gr amax. Apparently they are jumping 0.126" to the lands!! I am just wondering if that is just a gross error on my part? If thats the case I'm really going to be seating bullets quite shallow into the case heads for any smaller grain bullets to try and test out 0.020" jumps that I hear a lot of people using.
What I have noted on the RCBS mic is that it gauges well for the headspace measurement, but really can only be used as a comparator for the actual ogive measurement. In all reality I have used it as a comparator in both headspace & ogive.

Any other TRG owners noting a large jump to lands with factory ammo?

I have not really bothered measuring factory loads. That said my TRG loves 175 SMK's jumped at .020" or jammed at .010".

I have some Black Hills Match 175 at home, I will measure those up and see what they are at and will report back.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Factory ammo has large jumps to deal with wide variety of chambers and mags. I reload to .02 from lands, whch results in COALS that are much greater than published specs. As long as they cycle through the mag, no worries. I am currently trying to work through different readings that I get as between use of the Hornady comparator and the Sinclair chamber length gauge. Btw, I load for the TRG22 as well.

A few weeks ago I tested jammed, .005, .010, .015, and .017 off.

My best groups came from the .010-.015 range.

This is what I am liking at the moment.
TRG22 .308
45.2gr varget
155g berger VLD target.
3.265 OAL

I know I dont even need to type this, but start with the minimum load and work up to the max, bla bla bla, eye protection, bla bla bla, dont stick your finger in an electrical outlet, bla blah, etc

Awesome,

Well that takes a slight load off my mind. I've got everything ready to load up some 168 amax, 155 SMK, and try some 110 v-max for a fun varmint round. I plan on seating the 168 & 155 0.02-0.01 off the lands like you guys have stated and seat the v-max however I can, they are so blasted short.... On another note, should I be worried about a lightweight bullet exploding from the factory twist, or in all reality nothing should harm me or the rifle... right.. lol

always start low and increase up i guess ahahaha

I may be of no help, but I haven't found a load my TRG won't shoot lights out with...

...Rather than spending time trying to find a load it shoots well with, it seems I've been trying to find one it doesn't shoot well with. I've tried different powders, charge weights, bullets and seating depth, all of which has worked great.

I just measured the 168 amax at 2.800 oal and by a little number crunching I'm thinking my bolt face to lands dimension is around 2.251" plus or minus 0.05 or so.

How did you manage to get a 3.2 oal? My case length is 2" and if I seated my bullet as shallow as possible ( it would probably still fall out) I can only reach 3.1"ish and the bullet is 1.132" long from tip to beginning of boat tail (1.271 overall)

My OAL is from the ogive of the bullet.

Anything I load for short jump always exceeds 2.900"

yeah, the comp gauge is around 1.010" so need to subtract that. My typical ogives and COALs for the TRG-22 are:

-- 175 SMK: 2.913 COAL; 2.286 ogive (.02 jump)
-- 155 Scenar: 2.885 COAL; 2.220 ogive (.02 jump)
-- 175 Berger OTM: 2.920 COAL; 2.270 ogive (.02 jump)

I have seen web reports of up to 2.940 COAL using 175 SMKs.

Reloads with. 015" jump and FGMM with. 125" jump, all shoot good. Most 308s are setup to run 2.800" COAL, trgs can handle 2.950ish from the mag.

Hey.....its a 308.....you can load it with rocksalt and it will still shoot well!

Okay finally got around to measuring my BH Match 175g SMK. Using the Hornady comparator it shows as 2.175" to the ogive. I load my rounds to 2.278" to the ogive on the 175 SMK's.

The chamber on my TRG is 2.298" to the lands.
