My first impression with myTRG-22 was that my was not ejecting properly as I was accustomed to Remingtons and Winchesters. While daintily operating the bolt in order to keep my brass from dropping in the dirt, many would drop right on top of the mag. (They are not easy to fish out of the small port.) In very little time I learned the correct effort that would consistently stand the case up with shoulder pointed out for easy removal while single loading. After getting my loads dialed in and moving on to more serious practice, I found a fast, smooth cycle that will drop the brass nicely into the lid of my ammo box.

I wouldn't change a thing.

I bought my TRG 22 in 308 and have never regretted it. My main reasons:
1. Never shoot over 800 yards
2. Just as accurate as TRG 42 in 338.
3. Much less expensive to shoot the TRG 42 in 338
4. Much less recoil than the 338.
5. When some one shoots a 338 in any rifle shooters along side tend to get upset at noise and back blast.
6. I have a number of other rifles I reload for in 308 and did not have to buy new dies, projos and brass

I would go 42, and did...

The 42 is the standard M995 action, the 22 is a hybrid.

With the 42 you have a base for the finest switch-barrel rifle ever. Easy to buy a .473 faced bolt body and should you want the .590 super-mag capability as well.

The extra magazine length is a plus. 3.75" Short-action mag length limits you bigtime. 6.5/284 in the 42 receiver is superb choice. Firing pin assy transfers in seconds between bolt bodies. Easy to alter the magazine lips for smaller diameter cases.

An SAUM chambering would be awesome when teamed with VLD bullets. So many .533 diameter cases to choose from these days... I shoot a .338/300win in my 42, but a SAUM or WSM would also be very flexible.

Not a fan of any short-action rifles. Give up too much bullet seating flexibility unless shooting some shorty ctg like Hornet or .223rem.... Extra length means can utilize full case capacity w/o bullet intrusion below neck


All TRGs are nice rifles. The 42 has capability the 22 lacks though. Ever think you might want a magnum; just buy new bolt body and order custom barel and you are set. A .30/284 would be a much more viable LongRange .30cal choice than the .308, or can always go .30-06. Ackley Improved `06 with heavy VLD bullets. 10rds in a magnum magazine almost .300win mag velocity.

What's to prefer with the 22 unless you want to own both?
