In the 338 Lapua world is there any reason to get the 98B over the TRG-42? The TRG is at least $1000 cheaper new or used and TRGs accuracy is well proven. I am just trying to think if there is a reason to drop $4500 for a 98B when a used custom rig or a TRG42 can be had for around $3000?

Re: TRG 42 vs Barrett 98B???

The Barretts have a beautiful fit and finish. I also hear they are quite accurate. However, I do own and favor the TRG series. I think your reasoning is very sound. You will be hard pressed to find a better platform for the money.

Re: TRG 42 vs Barrett 98B???

You can get a trg42 for around 2400 if you look, so way cheaper and from the trg 22 I have and the 2 42's I have seen shoot I don't see the barrett being better, never have shot the barrett in 338 though. The trg would need a brake/bipod/and has no rear monopod so that adds another 700 to the price, plus the additional cheek spacers etc, they get closer equally equipped. I would search around to compare them in person.

I've seen the 98b in person the fit and finish are impressive but
I don't think it has anything over a TRG In that department. As far
as being a shooter I know the Trg's are ringers but do not know much
about the new entry. Personally if it was me and they were the same
price I would go with the TRG just on proven performance.

Good luck on your decision and which ever way you go you still
have a new rifle so' it's a win win situation!

Re: TRG 42 vs Barrett 98B???

Barretts are basically "tuned" from the factory as are the TRG's so both have an exceptional fit and finish.
Barrett = Buy American, pay for the name, expected accuracy, BMG styling (read Barrett styling)
TRG = Different styling, Expected accuracy, as someone mentioned Purchase of additional parts (at a premium)

If it were me I'd find a well equiped TRG and wouldn't look back.
