TRG Shooter swapping to AI...questions...

I don't post a lot because I basically work my life away ?‍, but what little time I have I do spend behind my TRG and glocks. I do love my TRG, but I've also found myself wanting an AI forever so I figured what the HAY...I'm jumping in now. BUT I have a couple questions for you AI guru's out there.

1. I noticed some AT's offered by Mile High and Euro, have either a HIGH, LOW or NO rail option. Are the rails just attached, so if a guy bought one with the HIGH rail option, but wanted to switch to either a LOW rail or just use the dovetail, he could remove the rail sections himself?....or are they actually a piece of the action?

2. For the guy's who have both AT and AXSA/MC....and hunt with their's...would you rather walk with your AT, or AXSA/MC...?

Their's a couple pretty good deals on both the AT and AXSA right now so I'm kinda up in the air. I can afford the AXSA, but not sure if I really "need" that over the AT.....

1. Yes you can change the rails no problem.

2. Have owned all 3 and IMO unless you need a magnum with the AXSA is the way to go. The AT is a great rifle but the extra features of the AX are worth the price if you’re a serious shooter.

The high rail was the original and allows a cowitness with the front NV rail. You can swap the rails around

No lol. I'm 5'10", 195 lbs. and hit the iron and cardio 4-5 times a week. Actual weight doesn't matter. Flush cup positioning, aluminum key mod fore end as apposed to the smoother skinned forend of the AT

With the AX you can put the front flush cut anywhere on the rail you like. The PSR butt on the AX is also extremely handy to quickly adjusting the LOP for use with heavy clothing and different positions.

If any of your hunting will be done at night the AX also has the advantage there with all of its forend real estate for being able to mount stuff like illuminators and rangefinders. Need more rail space? No problem, just buy the 16” forend and swap it on with two bolts.

Also, since I've never owned a folder, how "lock tight" is the mechanism on your AX Redneck? As in...let's say I have a couple beers, and wanna sit and fold/unfold that buttstock all night lol, little exaggeration but...is it always as perfectly tight as it comes new? Do they ever get "sloppy"

Yes. It’s got a little sphincter looking thing (no idea what it’s actually called in mechanical terms) and I’ve never seen it’s retention loosen up, or the lockup. They’ve always stayed tight for me and I’ve never heard of anyone else’s getting loose either.

Some will have a hinge that’s tighter than others but nothing that makes a difference either way. The hinge itself may wear a little over time but I’ve never even seen that get loose, not that it would really matter if it did.

The AT folder and AX actually use the same exact style of hinge and retention, the only difference is the direction they fold. The AX folds right and captures the bolt handle for a little skinnier overall package when folded.

I'm about your size and will hunt with my AXMC as needed. The ability to use one rifle for most everything is pretty appealing to me. I would encourage you to look at the AXMC, it's a great rifle. I picked mine up used, I'm at least the 3rd owner and the fold/lock is still very tight.

I’ll dissent a bit on the AXMC vs AT. I own both(actually a MC and a AW). I like my AXMC, but it just isn’t worth thousands more than a AT. I personally don’t care about the money spent, but overall value isn’t there imo. If money is no object for you though, by all means, get the AX.

On the folders, if you plan on carrying your rifle in the field, the Post 2014 AX series has the stock fold and cover the bolt which gives you a nice smooth backside for carrying it on your back. The AT and pre-2014 fold the other way (unless they changed it) so you always have either the bolt knob or the folded stock in your back.

Whether you get a AT or AX the one thing to get is a 6nm ( 53.10 inch pound) preset T handle torque wrench. I got mine from CDI Products. The accuracy can very if you don't torque the barrel the same every time.

Manual says 5-5.5nm (44.25-48.68 Inch-pounds force). Any reason you prefer to go higher?

I got better groups in both the AT and the AXMC with the 6nm vs the 5nm. I have both preset T handles.

I'm really kinda kicking myself for not ever getting one of the last AWM's when they were around. If I'd had gotten one, I'd just be getting an AT now . ?‍

I’ve had a custom in a AI/AT chassis, a AXMC and short action AX308.

I didn’t mind the AiAT ergonomics, but kept the AX308. I shoot short action calibers 95%+ of the time so I like the smaller framed AI. Ymmv.

All are great options so you may end up with more than one, it’s a sickness. I believe it’s contagious and must be in the factory cerakote kind of like anti microbial finishes... I still think the TRG trigger is as good as it gets but try to take my AI, I dare you! They are fantastic.

Yeah don't think I'll ever get rid of the TRG. The only thing I think Sako should have done was go the way of AI, and bond the action to a solid chassis
