Gunsmithing Triggers: How light is 1.5oz?

I realize this may be a bad question, but I'm going to ask anyway because I'm desperate for help. How light is a 1.5oz trigger? What does it feel like? Is it so light that even a slight touch will set it off? And how about a 3oz or even a 1.5lb trigger? Thank you for taking your time to answer!

Ps.I'm looking into the jewell BR or HVR for punching paper with a remington 700.

1.5 oz is a gnat sneeze away from letting loose. Some benchrest guys I build competition rifles for have to put their finger behind the trigger to keep it from going off as they close the bolt. Thats just craziness. I set their triggers at something sane but they receive their new rifle and tweak them down to nothingness. Dangerous in my opinion

Since you asked the question, you don't need one. I had a 1 1/2oz Jewell on a 22BR rifle. No margin for error. I use 2LB triggers on my centerfire rifles, and would consider going down to 1 1/2LB. Leave the OZ triggers to the BenchRest shooters.

I bought a heavy barrel Remington in .223 with a jewel trigger set at 1.5 oz. If your finger touches it and you breath it will go off. I had it reset to 2 pounds and was able to enjoy it after that. YMMV

Way to light for any field use, some like them on the bench.

Is this your only rifle? I have a problem going from what I am used to 3.5-5Lbs to lighter. Maybe thats just me

way to light for practical use, a 2- 2.5 lbs trigger will do everything you need it to

It's like there is nothing there. I shoot f-class and tried an 8oz. Jewell on my TR rig. I hated it and had no control. You're focussing on wind, etc and trying to remember not to breathe out or your gun goes off is not a good thing. I bumped it up to 16oz and life is good. My Open rig is at 12oz and I like it, but the rifle sits on a big rest and I'm not having to put as much shooter into it.

My field rifles are all between 2 and 3 lbs depending on the rifles intended use. That is perfect to me.

It is very light! The slightest touch or even a brush with it will set it off. Requires special technique to use it and then you hope you do not get a slam-fire when closing the bolt hard.

Mostly used by Benchrest shooters and some F-Open shooters, but I personally do not like it, having tried it.

Simply put... crazy dangerous. I love light triggers, but that is TOOOO light.

I have a Timney set by the factory at 1.5 and it is not quite as light as mentioned above, but you do need to be mindful of that trigger finger. Essentially keep out of the guard until you are on target but no issues with bolt closing setting it off.

Anything under 5oz and if you feel the trigger shoe it's already gone off.

I shot a .22br with a 2oz trigger and WOW it didnt even put a dent in the skin of my finger before the shot broke!

I agree with krw, if you have to ask it's way too light. All my triggers are set at 3 lbs. My wife's .22lr competition rifle was set at 3 oz, her description of it is "if you blew on it too hard it would go off"

Wow, thank you ALL for the eye-opening insight. I had no idea 1.5oz could be that extreme. After reading everyone's post, I've decided to go with a 16oz (or even a bit heavier) trigger. I guess that means I'll have to ditch the Jewell BR idea, and look for an alternative. Thanks so much again, everyone, and please feel free to chime back in with any suggestions!

I shot my buddy's savage with a three ounce trigger and when I touched it my response was OH SHIT. It was crazy light and I didnt like it. Just recently I ordered. Timney trigger set from the factory at 1.5 pounds. that coupled with the nice wide trigger shoe and its the nicest trigger ive ever had. It is also about as light as i would want to have

@Apothus - Yeah I only hear nice things about Timneys. Based on my uses and personal preference, though, I feel the 1.5oz - 48oz range would serve me better than the 1.5lb - 4lb range on the Timney. But I would certainly love to try one out!

There is no way I would have a trigger that light, I like to be able to feel the trigger before actually squeezing it. Most of my rifles are set at 2lbs and i use them for target and hunting. My dad set a timney well under a pound on my old Ruger and I quit shooting it. He set it that way since he can't shoot a pull trigger, he has shot trap so long he has to shoot a release trigger. He has pretty much quit shooting rifles because he can't pull the trigger, he has always said the day they make a release trigger for a rifle is when he will shoot rifles again.

My benchrest rifle has a Jewell trigger set to 1.5oz. In my opinion - it is necessary to have a trigger this light when you are looking for the ultimate accuracy. You don't need it if you aren't doing this type of shooting.

It took some time to learn how to use it. I can just barely feel contact with the trigger before it fires.

light is NOT right when it comes to triggers---most would be better served with a clean breaking trigger

national match shooters use 4.5lb triggers---if you are not better than them, you probably dont need anything lighter for anything

i have never used anything below 2.5lb in a rifle or handgun (1911)

My old silhouette pistol was at 16 oz. I had it a tic lighter but it didn't allow for jitters or the occasional twitch..

Of course this was in a contender that had a trigger job not a jewel or Timney. My Hunting rifle in 30-06 is right at 25 oz with a Timney. 1.5 to 2 lb seems good for me for a carry/pack gun.

I run a Kelbly 2oz trigger,turned down even more,on my br rifle.If I don't don't shoot it often,it takes a little while to get comfortable with it again.That is too light for field use,tactical or hunting.2.5-3 pounds is much more practical,and safe. Lightman

Any BR shooter that has a trigger that he has to put his finger behind, while closing the bolt, needs someone else working on his rifle. I've been shooting BR for 20 years, all of it with Jewell 1.5 Oz. triggers and never had to resort to putting my finger behind the trigger to prevent the rifle from discharging.

That sums it up. I have an 8oz on a bench gun and I have to make people dry fire it before I let them shoot it for real or they touch one off every time before they are ready. Even then it is 50/50.
I run a 1.5lb on my tactical gun. It is on the light side compared to the guys I shoot with but it feels great, is safe and I never let one go on accident. That said I am only using this gun on courses and only loading when in position and ready to fire. I would go with a higher pull weight if it was a hunting rig.

When the muzzle "blast" from the kids .22LR on the next bench sets it off, it's too light!
