Just picked up a MKIII 60mm and have it mounted to one of my AR15's. It sits too low for my liking when using the eye cup. So far it seems my options to raise the optic is to use a picatinny riser such as the GG&G or Larue Lt101 etc, or remove the eye cup completely. Other than the light shining on my face is ok to run this optic without the eye cup? Any input or suggestions are welcome. Will be used for coyote and predator hunting.

I removed the eyepiece the first day I bought mine a couple years ago. I use a regular flip open scope cap on it. I've never had a coyote notice any light spill from it. My buddy uses a Reap with nothing over his and has excellent results as well. I only flip mine open to shoot but my patrol is over my eye the whole time without any eyepiece whatsoever. I think sometimes people give coyotes too much credit.

Thanks for the reply. My fault for not being clearer with my question. My concern is with the optic itself and is it ok to run it without the eye guard. Other than dust ect making contact with the glass, will the unit be ok? Not concerned about the coyotes being spooked.

Do most shooters take the eye guard off and run flip caps?

Gotcha.
Another downside to the eyepiece is that when it's cold, holding your face up to it will sometimes cause your lens to fog.

Most take the eye guard off on day one (yes a few do not ... but most do)

Most use a flip cap. I've gone both with and without flip caps. I use a glass filter on the Patrol to reduce vis light output You can also reduce brightness. Most people run WAY too much brightness on their thermals.

I use a 5/8 “ Picatinney Riser on my Rifle to raise up the MKIII 60mm this also provides space underneath the Thermal to mount the attachment for the Caldwell picatinney mounted Brass Catcher. Also, I prefer the shuttered eyepiece for stealth.

I run the same yankee hill riser as Jrweston, rubber boot removed with butler flip up on a Mk3 35mm. Solid setup, and the need for a neck adjustment once a week at the chiro is not needed anymore. (y)
