Hi everyone.wanted some input on a lightweight hunting scope for my son’s first hunting rifle.purchased a winchester xpr 30-06 from a buddy.it’s going to be my son’s first hunting rifle.up till now he has been using mine.looking to keep this in the $400-500 range.after using my rifle with a Leupold vx6 he really wants a illuminated dot.40-50mm objective.lightweight.has to be good in low light.300yds is all we usually shoot.i would love to get a new vx5hd but that is almost double my budget.was looking at a Trijicon tr20.there around $500 but have no experience with them.any and all info appreciated

Trijicon Accupower 3-9x40 would give you an illuminated crosshair in the $500 range. Weight is 17oz I’ve got the 2.5-10x56 version and really like it. Athlon Midas BTR/HMR 2.5-15x50 is another option if you can find it.

For 300 yards I dont see why a VX3 wouldn't fit the budget, If you have to have one of those brands. I can appreciate that your son wants a scope that has all the features yours does... But if you are on a budget you are moreover looking at what he needs instead. Does he need a 6x zoom ratio with illumination for 300 yards. Nope. TBH I wouldnt give my son a rifle with a bunch of stuff on it for his first rifle. I would opt for something that had OK glass clarity with a good warranty and a robust build. Giving him everything now wont make him a better shooter.
