I'm eagerly awaiting a Terrapin X which will be my first laser rangefinder. It just occurred to me that I should probably have a solid mount to get the best results from the LRF but after looking at a variety of models of tripods/heads, I'm totally confused. The tripod itself is pretty straightforward and I looking at the Manfrotto 055 3 section aluminum. The heads though are something else - some have levers for adjustment in three axes, some have just a simple joystick and others are just a ball head with short locking levers. Are any of these superior to the other in terms of using it in the field for lazing targets or as a spotting scope stand? Any specific recommendations?

Any help would be greatly appreciated--

Dave

After considering the options, I decided to go with one of the RRS SOAR tripod combos - TFCT-34 MkII - with the ARCA attachment plates for my KOWA spotter and Terrapin. What a great decision if I do say so myself! The price of the tripod requires a strong belief in the "buy once, cry once" principle (there was a lot of crying) but once over that you have a superb system - easy to use, light weight, durable, stable handmade in the USA.

I have a Feisol 3372 and RRS anvil 30 and could not be happier. I ranged a cow the other night at 2271 yards, see video below.

Tripod and head also work great for rifles and spotting scopes/binos as well.

Tried several different heads over the years and and finally settled on a Manfrotto 405 gearhead when the 25C is co-witnessed with my spotter. The 410 will work well if just the LRF is mounted to the tripod.
