trouble choosing a .308

I'm wanting a .308 auto loader so I can hunt large game as well as target shooting. My target shooting would probably be limited to 800 yards. I've debated getting a 6.8 upper and slapping it on an extra lower I have, but there are just too many advantages to the .308.

Sub MOA is critical to me as well as reliability and solid customer service and backing of the product. I want a 20" barrel and one that accepts magpul magazines ( I believe the ones I've narrowed it down to do). Thus far I've narrowed it down to these models:

GAP 10 (accuracy and customer service, it's a GA Precision, enough said).

LT OBR (accuracy and customer service)

LWRC REPR (From what I understand they are accurate, reliable and have good customer service)

I considered a POF, but my impression is they are hit and miss with regard to reliabily and customer service)

I'm posting this to get general feedback to help me make my decision... Thanks in advance..

This debate has been beaten to death... All the options listed will do just what you're asking. I've got a LWRC REPR with the 20" barrel and it has been a solid MOA rifle with many unique features. If you're interested in one, mine is for sale (due to the fact that I want to start shooting big bore rifles... i.e .50BMG or Barret .416). But as I stated before all of the listed .308 platforms perform to your standard. Pick your poison.

i think a guy here recently built a MA10 and it shot sub moa at 100 in his posts. cant recall the barrel or anything but you can do pretty good on your own with quality parts and DIY or sending it to GAP for assembly

1.pick a quality upper/lower you like.

2. pick a quality barrel ie: GAP bartlien, kreiger, Rock, etc

3. Buy a good trigger ie: wilson, Geisselle, AR gold, Timney

4. everything else is pretty much personal taste and secondary to the above. a good trigger and barrel MAKES the gun.

I have the 16" OBR and I have to say I'm very happy with it. I had good experience with the REPR (good customer service). I do read good things about the GAP and I did have some issues with POF (customer service problems not the rifles).

Agreed, when I was looking at semi autos in 308 the LMT MWS was at the very top of my short list. Even though I ended up with a bolt gun instead this time, I would love to own a MWS in the future. It meets all the criteria you have listed OP.

I have had 2 POFs and had a few very minor hiccups which were promptly addressed by POF customer service. I highly recommend POF if you want an accurate 308. Customer service was absolutely perfect. In my book all hit and no miss! Will buy POF again for sure.

I appreciate all the feedback. Are the POF hand guards as "fat/wide/thick" as I've heard?

For about the same price you can get a LMT which is a battlefield rifle vs the DPMS that is a commercial rifle. They both have a purpose but I know how I would spend my money.. LMT.

The handguard I have on mine (not the newest version) is about 2" across where your hand would be. I don't feel like it is too thick at all.

My POF has the new HSR (hunter-sniper rail) and in my opinion, it's superior to the predator rail system that my other POF had. It's lighter and feels so much better in your hands.

I went with the LMT MWS 16" CL because of the barrel/caliber flexability. Since getting it I have tried the POF and the OBR. I'd take any of those three for your needs but I would stay with the 16" barrel to save weight. The 16 will do what you want it to do.

LMT 16" CL, M118LR, SWFA 1-4X24 HD, 7 1/2" group at 700 yards.

I have also shot the LWRC REPR in addition to my POF 308. I really liked the REPR a lot. My POF was a touch more accurate but I would be happy with either to be honest. Really like the side charger on the REPR.
And agree with Killshot about the new HSR rail on the POF. It is lighter and does feel a little better - you have more room to move your forward hand with it.

Another vote for the LMT. I have over 600 rds. through mine so far without a malfunction and without cleaning. Still waiting for it to start malfunctioning or a decrease in accuracy. Shoots MOA or better with everything I have used so far, except some Chilean junk ammo. Even Radway Green surplus shot to MOA in this thing! One of the best rifles I have ever owned. At least check it out.

Edit- Prairie Dog Dundee forgot to mention he shot that group at 700 using a 1-4x scope. Near MOA at 700 with a low-power optic is good shooting, and a good rifle.

I've been following the LMT MWS thread and coupled with the advice received from this thread, I'm seriously considering the LMT as well. At this point, I'm deciding between the LMT and REPR. Thanks for all the feedback and Happy Independence day to all!!!

I believe they are using the upper receiver, lower receiver and the POF handguards. No POF internal parts are used (from what I understand).

One thing to remember about the GAP is that you can interchange uppers with another GAP upper build or a standard POF upper. I just put a GAP-10 on order for an 18" in 308, but in the near future I want to have them build me a 260 upper receiver. This is what sold me on the GAP in addition to their outstanding customer service and reputation for outstanding accuracy. LWRC is nice but just too expensive. The price on the GAP is considerably less than the Larue. When I added the PRS and Surfire brake to it, it cost me about the same the Larue would without the goodies.

Another vote for the LMT MWS(E or F). Will shoot lights out, straight out of the box and with a few mods and good glass, you will not be disappointed.

I really wanted an LWRC REPR, but after researching heavily I went with the GAP 10 since it's more for the money and the same if not better accuracy and more options for future adjustments...

I really like the REPR. It is a great system. I think it may be a bit over pirced but never the less a great option. Did you look at JP rifles at all? I think they might be a good option. A bit expensive but also very nice and accurate.

I had issues with my POF 6.5 Creedmoor but I think it was caliber specific because of how new it is. For 308win, it's a different story and very reliable. Even though I was frustrated because of jamming, customer service was great and they fixed the problem. Now it shoots about 3/4 moa consistently.

I chose POF over REPR because of lighter weight and the ease of disassembly especially the piston system. The advantage of REPR is the side charging handle, but IMHO not worth the much higher cost.

My friend has a LMT and it's really nice too.

Speaking of problems, I know that the REPR has had a few issues with the front selector knob freezing up, but is was an easy fix once sent back the LWRC. They were nice but never the less who wants to have to send their rifle back to the MFG.

Pof's had the same issues with the gas block... They said just to cycle the action a few times which will help remedy the problem. I had 1 issue with my repr locking up but after a good cleaning and proper lubrication I haven't had any other problems. The difference in price is a couple hundred bucks.... Buy once cry once.

I would go with POF for accuracy. As stated earlier in the thread, there's a reason GAP uses a number of POF parts. Anyone can assemble a rifle well or not so well. The engineering chemistry metallurgy and precision machining can't be done so quickly though. POF excels in those markets, and that's why I picked them. (that and being able to take down 1200 pound elk with a single round and enough ammo left in the clip for an angry charging bear that wants my elk while I'm field gutting)

I did get one of the good POFs, deadly accurate out of the box and I'm about 500 rounds later with no issues, misfeeds, failures or signs of carrier tilt. I've seen mixed reports online about their rifles out of the box, but customer service is the same anywhere. For every 100 thrilled customers 1 makes 1 good comment. For every 1 angry customer they make 100 angry comments in 100 places. I got mine at Cabela's because I know they have outstanding customer service and I'm fortunate enough to be within an hour of their giant MI campus. They also saved me a ton of money even though it was the new model with the HSR rail, and I echo killshot's sentiments on that new rail. So much lighter and nicer than the previous rail.

Noveske! I had a 21" barrel model that was one of the finest shooting .308 rifles I have ever owned. It would shoot with any bolt action .308. Sold it to a buddy (and Snipers Hide member) and he ran it at matches and would ring steel at 1000 yrds all day long.

A quality trigger and barrel seem to be what makes these rifles shoot. Noveske makes a great barrel, they are cut using Pac-Nors equipment but they are by no means a Pac-Nor. Not to mention Noveske has outstanding customer service. They not only did me right, but they did my buddy who bought the rifle from me right. They stand behind their product.

LWRC had problems with PMAGs before too, every company has some problems but it is a matter of how good their customer service is and if the fix it.
