True Range Zero

Not sure I completely understand the true range zero that Frank was talking about in Ep 197.

I see Hornady 4DOF allows me to input how high the POI is at a given range, (say .07 mil @98.5 yards, just a random example)

I forget rye example he used it it was something like 9mm high at 100 yard zero gave a true range zero of 145...so now you'd input your zero range as 145?

Is there an easy way to calculate that true range in order to input that into AB, since AB doesnt have that correction factor?

Hope I'm not butchering that too much, will edit if I'm saying things wrong, to avoid confusion.

@lowlight isn't this the same as entering zero offset in the kestrel, so if my best adjustment is off by +0.05mil at my given zero range, I just enter 0.05mil in the kestrel offset?

it accomplishes the same thing, but it is not discussed in the same way.

These others specifically talk about a True Range Zero vs a Zero Offset which is more in line with changes to the system without actually re-zeroing.

The offset is often discussed when switching ammo, adding a suppressor, not being perfectly zeroed due to an outside factor. A true range zero in these other apps actually calculates a new distance and helps visualize the difference,

It's more a perception thing, what you are looking to accomplish

Ok so if I understand correctly, if my zero group is high by 0.05mil and I either enter the offset or calculate the true range zero and use either in my ballistic calculator my dope should be the same level of accurate at distance?

The true range zero shows that the zero is beyond 100y at some distance vs an offer that doesn't really describe where the zero is.

Yep. One way is saying “I have a 100yd zero but it’s .1” high” and the other is saying “I have a 107 yd zero”
