Gunsmithing Truing, bedding, rebarrel w/ Broughton 5c on 700

I just ordered a 32" blank "scendero" contoured Broughton 5c barrel for my .300 win mag 700 police. I have a guy that is great at builds. My question is in order to blue print, and properly bed the barrel, how much is the average Joe charge ?? Also what is the real benefit of bedding??

Oooh goody, a fun question!

Let's pretend were drag racing in NHRA Pro Stock. Were both competitive even and we found that it takes 1350hp to do it.

YOU are an animal and spend some extra late night nights and a couple hundred extra G's to whip up an extra 15-20 hp from your engines.

I don't.

In the controlled settingof pro class drag racing I will never catch you. Not unless your sleeping at the light.

Much is the same with guns, but first you gotta find that 1350hp. As you suggested it starts with a great barrel. That "15-20hp" is your bedding, action work, yada, yada...

You won't realize the potential of bedding (done well/right) without everything else first.

Recently we restocked a stock barreled FN SPR. Yesterday the cst contacted me elated that the group size had split in half from what it was prior to bedding? Did we work a miracle? No. We just provided a means for the barrel to run to its potential by bedding it right.

Point is, done well it does improve performance, but its still only as good as the barrel installed. It won't fix/polish a turd.

Thats kind of an open question:
- Don't let the "average joe" blueprint your action, make sure his work is well respected, and verify.

some price ranges:

blueprint: Action&Reciever also includes surface grinding recoil lug 600.00 +/-
chambering the barrell 200.00 +/-
bedding the action 200.00 +/-

If your going to go this far you might think about opening up the scope mount screws to 8-40, and re aligning them. Also not only lap your scope rings but do a bedding job on the scope also.

In no way would I ever do that. The guys name is Don Geraci. He builds competition rifles that WIN. Ive already got badger ordanance base and rings so I see no need for the 8x40 screws. Have any of you guys shot a Broughton??

Just an FYI:

The larger screws, while they do offer a touch more security, also offer the ability to resolve potential issues.

A "G" series M700 for example is sort of known for having goofy base screw holes. It may not be readily evident until you actually take the time to indicate stuff.

Done right (meaning NOT using a drill/tap) can allow a guy to align the base holes common to the bore axis after accurizing the receiver. This means your eating up less windage on a scope when zeroing the gun. Also means there's less potential of having a base slighly "kinked" which can cause an action to flex a bit-negating the effects of bedding unless it's bedded with the base installed (hint hint)

Just something to consider.
