In fact, in historical terms, it has (probably) failed many times more than communism. I suspect that in logical terms, the likeliest outcome of democracy is communism, and that of communism is failure. Is humanity actually capable of governing itself in a democratic manner? I cannot answer.
No matter what form of government, even since barbarity, humans have only ever behaved under the threat of force. Democracy purports to transfer the force of the group of individuals over to some selected proxy. But the proxy always reverts to employing that force on behalf their own purposes, regardless of whatever their promises say. In my view, this is the point at which democracy always fails.
I cringe at the thought of civil war; it's the truest scenario whereby the baby gets discarded along with the bath water. No-one who actually espouses such a thing can reasonably predict even within 180 degrees the direction the outcome of such could bring.
With luck, I will be gone before anything like that comes to pass. But it likely will, and I hope that whatever the outcome is, whatever permitted this disgusting current state of affairs to come about is never reinstated.

I'd suggest at this stage the 2020 election is Trump's to loose and so we'll get to see what he really wants to do when he doesn't have to worry about re-election, and that kind of leaves a lot of possibilities open.
No system is going to last forever. Eventually human nature wins out and event the best put together systems fall into decline. Our founders knew this point would come and built in some contingencies. In fact they never imagined we would go 243 years without some type of violent reworking of it. There hasnt ever been a communist system I would have wanted to live under at any point in its natural cycle of birth and decay. The opposite is true for democracies and our republic in particular.
I don't trust those polls and articles. I figure it's just a way of motivating the left to get out and vote. If you don't, it's "four more years of Trump."
Trump will not win in a landslide, no way. The nation is too divided. If he wins it will be, again, because the alternative scares off too many voters. The Demos are in a tough spot, they have to rally their base, which included coddling the most radical-leftists out there, which in turn, drives away responsible Demos who otherwise might vote for somebody other than Trump.
