TSA Delta specifically

Is a mag with the cover (see below) over the ammo legal to fly. I’ve read about mag pouches and the need for “the bullet to be covered” but haven’t attempted this yet.

Airlines set their policy for how they accept ammunition. Delta requires ammo in the factory packaging or in a gridded type box (think aftermarket ammo boxes). They also only allow up to 11lbs of ammunition per ticketed passenger.

This is correct. Ammo storage is airline policy.

It's in your best interest to read the published policy for your airline and not rely on internet postings. Airlines can, and have, made changes without notice to how special items(oversized, firearms, etc) are treated and charged. Read the latest policy and be prepared to educate the employees on it.

Also budget extra time. I add a hour. Usually not needed, but it did save me when flying in Detroit once.
