I realize this is not the norm on here but I am wanting to turn down a Model 7 action to shave some weight for an ultralight build. Someone emailed me some pics of one that was turned down behind the lug. Just wondering if any here have tried this and how far dow nthe ycan be turned. I realize I am only shaving 4-5 ounces max.

I wouldnt turn anything down behind the lug. The most I might do is the sheep hunter cut on the left side of the bolt. You will get rid of a hell of a lot more weight by going with a smaller profile barrel or taking some barrel length off. Just my thoughts.

Getting a carbon fiber wrapped 12.5" Wildcat stock, has a 700 MR contour barrel, fluted bolt, skeletonized handle, putting a Basix trigger in to shave an ounce or ounce and a half, cutting barrel to 18.5". With one piece ultralow Talley's, a Light Leupold, and a PTG aluminum shroud hoping to hit the 5-5.25 mark.
Not behind the recoil lug, that's asking for trouble. Behind the locking lugs, AKA, at the forward edge of the ejection port and moving back from there, it's plausible.
I think you're playing with fire though if you don't have the skills to strength-qualify the action changes you're talking about making here. I'm not going to tell you how, not because I don't think it can be done, but because if you screw it up somehow I don't feel like being held responsible in any way.
An additional consideration is that turning down the action OD (other than the issues from the interrupted cut and the strength issues that I'm not going to advise you on) is the fact that you'll be removing the roll stamped markings on the receiver which violates the GCA 68. Remember, it doesn't say "serial number" it says "markings" which is the Remington stamp, the model number, and anything else on the side INCLUDING the SN.

Point taken. I was originally going to do the slab cut or send it to the place ( I forget there name) that cuts windows so to speak in the action behind the locking lug. I actually meant locking lugs and not the recoil log thanks for the correction. I have some pics I will load up tonight of various ideas I was given by different smiths.
I want to see the pics of the "various ideas". I love light hunting rifles and this interests me.

I thought about doing this and chickened out in the end. Do a google image search for Wild West Guns- he lightens 700s in a few places. Some lightening jobs looks hash, some look cool- let us know how it goes
Check out Rifles Inc, and how Lex does the lightening on the 700's. This is one of his heavier 308's.

this is what I did to the bolt on a Remington I am building for a friend. I was going to put some straight flutes on it (I am not set up for spiral fluting) but was worried about them ratcheting on cases in the magazine. I sent it off to chad Dixon to be fluted and will finish it in KG when it gets back. going to use fluted firing pin and aluminum shroud too. thinking about some fluting on the receiver as well.
i looked at the slab cuts that twistedbarrel does and i had thought about doing that before. i was leery about milling away the "Remington model 700" off of the receiver like they do. i don't guess there are any legality issues since they do it and advertise it. i think it looks pretty trick. i wish some of the accomplished smiths would chime in and let me know how deep you can flute a Remington bolt or the rear of a 700 receiver without causing issues.

I've attacked a L700 once. I turned down the action between from the front of the loading port to the rear of the port. Worked on the bolt handle and fluted the bolt. The rifle was a 6.5-06 Imp. #2 barrel I fluted. I think I got 3 ozs. out of the barrel the way I set it up. Great rifle but I wouldn't do all that work again. I would just get a Titanium receiver and use that as the foundation.

Maybe i am not seeing the pic right but i just dont see how that could only be 3oz of weight! Dont like the way it looks at all and woukdnt even consider it for that reason alone. Any other pics or ideas?This is the pic someone sent me. Not sure if I would do it or not. I like the Model 7 logo on the side and he only shaved 3 ounces with this.
