I am trying to decide on a scope for a varmint rig and I need to decide whether I want a scope with or without exposed turrets?? I am a handicapped hunter so most of my hunting is done off my Kawasaki Mule. So my rifle gets bounced around a good bit, however it will never see the rough treatment that some of you guys put your rifles through. Should I be concerned about the exposed turrets of either the NF-NXS scope or the exposed turrets of the Leupold MARK IV scope??

Also I have read that the only difference between the turrets in the MARK IV and the new VX-3 is whether they are exposed or not. Is this true??

I will not be doing alot of turret adjustment. All shots will be less than 350 yards. I am just wanting to purchase a nice scope for my new rifle. Thanks, Tom.

Re: Turret Question

I would not be worried about the turrets on the NF. The Leupold should be OK, but I don't think they are quite as robust.

For your application, I would suggest that holdovers are your friend, so this could be a moot point. If the right scope with the right reticle jumps up, you should not be to worried about covered or exposed (if the above is true).

I have seen guys knock the crap out of thier NF and USO turrets with no damage.

Re: Turret Question

I do alot of "barn yard" hunting. However I still like to be able to shoot out to 300 or 350 yards with my 223 in hunting conditions.

"Barn yard" hunting is a bit unique in that precision shooting is often needed. This is why I wanted a good quality scope with turrets. In this type of shooting you are often shooting around many obstacles, as well as live stock. I ordered a new rifle and suppressor the other day, now all I need is a scope.

This is my reasoning behind my question.

I am considering the 4.5X14 VX-3, 4.5X14 MARK IV, and the NF scope for this rifle. I am just not sure if my application requires the extra expense of the NF scope?? Tom.

Re: Turret Question

You will be wasting your money if you go with USO, NF, or any other high dollar scope in my opinion, UNLESS you need the robustness that comes with them. If you only need the precision at close range(Barnyard) I would suggest a SWFA SS in 10x42 zeroed at 50M and use holds or slip your scales and make your dope for out to 300M.
Believe me, I love my USO's. I would pimp them across the South if need be, however, unless one requires the absolute total no bullshit hardcore robustness of these top end military scopes they are just a cool point at the local range. I beat the hell out of mine just trying to find new places to shoot. I beat a USO SN4 into submission when deployed but it worked and kept working. That is what your big money gets. Straigh hardcore reliability, but the entry cost is substantial.

For a range gun, or a regular hunting gun the SWFA's, Leatherwood's, Leupold's and a few others are fine. You will have more money to spend on ammo in the end. Just giving you a little more to think about since you mentioned close range and just a little hunting and rec shooting. Still, a nice USO, NF, S&B, or whatever always looks good on a nice rifle too
