.308, Harris with the double extensions for chuck huntin.

Had a good time today even with the wind monster beating us up. Sorry about the 1st target on station 4, Tom. I didn't call the wind quite enough and got the leg on that one. Set a new personal best for myself at 102 points and used 28 rounds to get it for 16 targets. See you all next time.

Not a problem. That target gets it the worst. I changed the angle on it and I need to move it back, I was experimenting and now I have my answer. I will get it fixed this week and all the targets painted black for next weekends match. Hope all had a good time this weekend. Sorry I wasn't out there to join in but my daughter came to visit this weekend and I took the chance to spend the time with her. Thanks to all who helped out at the matches this weekend.

I plan on giving it a go, atleast on the short course sometime soon. I'm afraid I've never shot much past 200yds, not to mention ever shooting prone, so I will need some coaching. I don't have the good equipment that some of you all have, but it should be fun and a great learning experience. I'm building up a 6BR on a Savage action and I should have the barrel in a couple of days, then I can start testing loads. It will wear a Weaver T24 as that is the best I've got at the moment. As soon as I get this rig dialed in, I hope to come up and meet everyone. Heck, I only live 25 minutes away.

You really don't need the high end equipment to come have fun. If you know your gun and have some settings to start with you'll be in the ball park. If you know your velocity and get some data from JBM you can be pretty darn close.
Main thing is to have fun, learn from each shot and keep accurate records for future use. The short course is really a blast and quite challenging and is perfect for starting out.

I'm having a new issue with my zero shifting all over the place. Two minutes high & 2 min left at start of Sunday, corrected that & shot long course, then checked zero after and it changed to 4 minutes low. Dope wasn't checking out all day and guys had to direct me onto the target. Haven't changed load & made sure nothing came loose. Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 mildot. Setup still produces 1/2 MOA groups, but the zero moves around. Is this a glass issue?

Could it be a parallax issue? I'm new the long range game, but parallax can cause a big shift in the crosshairs and POI. If your scope doesn't have AO, this could be the culprit. I shoot 22 benchrest and Ive seen guys have major problems at 50yds with scopes that are set up to be parallax free at 100yds.
To get an idea, look at something through your scope at a long ways off. Leave your rifle rest in the bags and without touching the rifle, move your head from side to side and up and down to see how much the hairs move in relation to the target. I think your scope is set up to be parallax free at 150yds, so the parallax may be affecting your POI, and the further you shoot, the worse this effect with be. Again, I'm new to this game, so take this with a grain of salt.

My Granny fell and hit her head and neck.
They took her to the ER.
She has a DNR.
Planning for the weekend, but it may change.

Could be a few things, but to rule out the scope you obviously need to try a different optic or put that scope on another rifle. I cringed the first time I saw you put a bipod directly on the barrel. If you are canted due to terrain your barrel may jump a different way each time. A float tube would probably be a good investment. Whatever you do only change one thing at a time.

His zero changed from Saturday to Sunday morning.
Saturday evening Karl helped him hit birds at 1000 from the bench.
Sunday morning his zero was off from the bench.
Sunday afternoon his Sunday morning zero was off again from the bench.
I kinda think tweaked glass.
Wind was the main variable this weekend.
Maybe try having zero wind before cranking elevation.

I ordered 6-9 Harris S-BRM bipod and lock, rear bag, and 20 moa base today from Midway. I just got the Ballistic software for my IPhone. It's coming together now. I just need a chrony to get my velocity for the loads I settle on and I should be on my way. Hope your Granny is OK.

Hey, help me out with some sights.
I'm working on a couple short things for the short course.
12" SSk in 4570 or 14" TC in .357 Herrett.
Might even raise your short guns to a paper Sharps.
Big cloud of white smoke is kinda hard to see hits.
I'll shoot the short ones Creedmore.
I learned that postion is not good with an AK!
That sucker in the pics is around 17 lbs with the bipod.
I'll try to remember to have a high-lighter with me next time too.

I had fun on Saturday. A light breeze helped with the match. Congratulations on the win Glen. I hope the action shots I took on your camera worked out.
When we went through the course again,I had even more fun. The wind had the subtle gusts to 38 mph. The rain helped too. I was wet only on one side. Everything was still good. I was not completely soaked. On position 2 was the best though. Some of us deceided to engage the first target offhand. Wayde was successful with his first round hit. Good shooting. I would like to think I was a good wind block for him. I didn't do as well. I will practice more. I think the idea of position shooting on that course is a good one. I want to do that more often.

Glen, you'll prob find that scope choice will be toughest hurdle to get over. Prob a 2.5 - 8 Leupold but both of those guns might be tough on the variable power scope. Maybe a fixed 4x but hope ya got good eyes. Both will get there fine and prob have enough accuracy but dealing with the trajectory and being able to dial that in a pistol scope might be tough. Even with a 200 yard zero the Herritt will need about 30 to 35 moa to get to 550 and with a 300gr in the 45-70 it'll need about 55 to 60 moa to get to that last target.
Either choice would definately be a challenge. That black powder would definately be fun to watch and might surprise a lot of shooters. Having fun and learning to shoot these distances accurately with unconventional weapons is always a learning experience and is what I enjoy the most.
I still appreciate you all allowing us to participate out there. Had a blast and hope to show up a few more times this summer.

Yeah, I'd say I had a little luck on my side though. I tried to back it up with another shot, I got close but couldn't pull it off. Definitely a challenge with a 12lbs rifle and 30mph wind beating you to death, but fun.

Discussed problem with tech @ Bushnell: going to run some tests to see if I can replicate the problem. They said it sounds like it's a scope issue with either the reticle not positioned correctly or something along the lines of what Glenn had in mind. If I can cause it to do it again, they'll replace it at no cost & tear it down to see what the issue is.
Going to buy another identical scope anyways to put on a .308 Rem 700 SPS Tactical build. Time to upgrade from the peashooter.

Others may crank and bind without showing signs of problems.
Only they don't repeat later.(me)

TO ANYONE READING THIS THREAD AND THINKING "I MIGHT WANT TO TRY, BUT I DON'T HAVE A FANCY RIFLE":
-I shot this course with a $200 NEF Handi-Rifle in .223 Rem.
-I had never taken a shot at anything much past 200 yards before.
-I shot handloads with 50 gr Nosler BT bullets.
-I didn't win, but I hit more targets than I missed...in 20+ MPH winds.
-By the end of the day, I could hit steel @ 600 yards.
-I had an absolute blast shooting, and the guys there couldn't have been more helpful.
-I got some free Easter candy.
-I will be back.

-I had never taken a shot at anything much past 200 yards before.
-I shot handloads with 50 gr Nosler BT bullets.
-I didn't win, but I hit more targets than I missed...in 20+ MPH winds.
-By the end of the day, I could hit steel @ 600 yards.
-I had an absolute blast shooting, and the guys there couldn't have been more helpful.
-I got some free Easter candy.
-I will be back.

Glad you had a good time. The short course is full of surprises indeed. No one has aced it yet either. The targets are all set where they are for a reason. Only the wind gods can predict your day. This course is perfect for the hunter/varmint hunter or LE precision shooter.
I'm already designing a shorter short course for kids or very small caliber and pistol shooters out to 300 yards. All steel ground hog targets. 8"x18" dim.
We are also doing an evening shoot now from 5:00 pm - done.
Wednesday is the main day we are shooting for.

Got the old handy out myself.
I may need some help with a load.
Need to check for mounts, but may put the Old Tasco on and set a zero.
Don't forget, your brother was picking on birds at 1000 with his rig.
My bro is a better shooter than me too, but I don't care.

FYI, couldn't replicate the problem with my scope, trying twice last week. Shot personal best on short course Sunday, hit 1000yd birds after, and zero checked out right on after. Maybe the knobs just needed cranked a few more times, or some excess lube on the threads..

Yeah, zeroed wind before cranking up to 49 min. elevation & back down. No change in zero. Cranked 20 min. windage & then up 49 min. elevation, fired & back down. No change in zero. Think the scope just needed to get used to getting cranked.
