A couple weeks ago, I placed an order for a barreled action chambered in 7LRM. The pertinent details for the purpose of this discussion are that I'm going to be running a 26" M24-profile barrel, and am planning on dropping the whole shebang into a Cadex chassis. The question I have is, should I run a TBAC CB mount (which means the Ultra 7), or a TBAC 338BA mount (which means the Ultra 338)?

I have gotten the green light from the folks at TBAC regarding the use of the Ultra 7 on a 26" barreled 7LRM, but I'm wondering if it's going to be enough brake/can for the application. I'm not super recoil-sensitive (my latest completed build is a ~11 pound 338WM running 250 gr projectiles at 2650-ish), so I'm thinking that either way I'm not going to end up with something that's un-shootable for me... but I s'pose that more than anything I'm looking for Ultra 7 users who have experience shooting Win Mag-class (and larger) cartridges through that can.

Any input is appreciated.

There was another post I was reading that I can't seem to find right now. The poster was talking about how well the 338 Ultra worked for their rifle (either 300 NM or 338LM) and how noticeable the recoil change was over a Ultra 7. If you can swing it, I'd get a 338 Ultra.

7LRM recoil is not worth worrying about, especially with that heavy rig. Either can/brake will give you a rifle that is very comfortable to shoot from a recoil perspective.

From a suppressed performance standpoint, that is a completely different story. The 338 Ultra will be significantly quieter. I don't have an Ultra 7, but I have an Ultra 9 and an Ultra 338 and have run both of them on 28 Nosler. The 338 is a big step up in noise reduction over the Ultra 9, and the difference would only be greater compared to the Ultra 7.

All- I appreciate the input. I was thinking of using the Ultra 7 to minimize length/weight, but as surgeon260 mentioned, the whole setup is going to be on the larger/heavier side of things, anyhow... so I might as well maximize both recoil reduction and sound suppression and go with the Ultra 338.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

If you already have the 338 then go for it.

I have a 338 and 9 and use the 9 on my 7/338LM.

Too cheap and lazy to get an extra brake for the 338 and had an extra brake on hand for the 9.
