I got a 96yrs old grandmother who needs assistance. Thank the lord that we have the wherewithal to pay for 24 hr home care. She lives between my cousin and mother so they're there everyday besides (I'm several hours away) But Nursing homes scare the crap out of me. Who knows what type of care a loved one is going to get from day to day. Not one person needs to be punished for this, several do, from the nurses to the house keepers.

Thank you sir. This was many years back - took private treatment (about 2 years of it) to get him off of the stuff. Literally he could walk into the VA and they would just hand him a bottle. Like a drive-thru basically.

He is doing much better now, 80 percent I'd say.

Being that I'm a medical monkey, this article repulses me. For the life of me, I've never understood how medical "professionals" can become so incredibly apathetic to the point it causes harm to their patient.

Here's a comment from that article which gave me a chuckle at the George Carlin level of satire:

I agree full heartedly. You want to bring third world shit to our homeland? I will respond in kind with equal level third world shit. In my experience, it is much harder to treat those around me in a civilized fashion. However, if they treat me in a civilized manner, I am compelled by unspoken honor to return the favor. If you are going to treat me like an animal, I will not hestitate to do the same to you, and it requires far less effort on my part...

Don't look for any significant discipline or corrective measures. ( other than for political expediency)

Seriously, if the story is true as stated....... ( and after having 2 parents in homes, I don't doubt it for a second)

Sit back and list every process ( nursing, housekeeping, facility management, facility maintenance etc.) that had to FAIL ENTIRELY and the time they had to remain in a failure state for this to happen.

Then realize the scope of the problem. The ants didn't have a secret meeting and decide to go after this guy at the exclusion of all other patients and I doubt he had 6 months of exposed food to act as an attractant. You can bet there are a lot more in the building and they have been there a while.

Add all that together and see if all the factors get addressed.

I've seen how they treat people who can't defend themselves at VA --no goddamn way in hell I'm dying like that. "Born on the Fourth of July" is a movie about a vet during Vietnam; I can't say as VA hospitals have changed much since. The antiquated equipment isn't AS antiquated but the people are every bit as bad, if not worse. The few good VA employees usually wind up quitting or are just so goddamn outnumbered by the POS's that it's hard to give 'em much notice unless it's personal (like my recent OR nurse and doctor, both were on top of it). However, there hasn't been a single time that I've been admitted to one where I haven't had to get in some kind of heated argument with a POS employee who cannot be fired.

Last time the motherfuckers stole my pain medication, guess I didn't need it, I'm just laying in bed on IV antibiotics and damn near at death's door (uh, also thanks to the VA I might add). I suppose the "nurse" who kept lauding me with tales of opioid crisis bullshit needed 'em more. Because they definitely got dispensed, and a whole shitload of 'em too at the doctor's orders, just not to me. And it must not be THAT big of a crisis either because they didn't bother investigating it. Holy shit if *I* were to come up missing a pill though.

Nevertheless, I was too busy to deal with that so I sucked it up, I was busy making sure my "battle buddy" suffering a stroke in the next bed over wasn't getting manhandled by another POS who couldn't be fired "because he was making his jobby job difficult". You HAVE to watch out for one another there. You HAVE to. Goddamn place needs to be just shut the fuck down permanently IMO. If the employees can't find work in the private sector then take that as a message to find work in a different area where being shitty to people and not giving a fuck isn't such a big deal, like at Taco Bell.

PS, the only time I HAVEN'T been fucked over by VA is when they farmed it out to a doctor of my choice. Plus, who the fuck wants healthcare via a government agency? I mean, really?
