i notice allot of guys both bolt and semi guys that "use" their rifles have some sort of "hook" or "stop" in the bottom f their butt stocks such as on this PSG-1 butt stock

psg1circle.jpg

my understanding is that when in use the left or non-shooting hand is used much like a sand bag and that "hook" sits between thumb and pointer finger and is cradled in the palm

now my question is what about when your testing ammo on the bench ? what is the proper technique then ?

i have an msg90 buttstock, and its "hook" is far more forward and is vary hard on the left wrist so i have to put my hand tword the back where the butt pad adjusts in and out.. that hurts the back of the hand mainly cause that butt stock end is sharp lol.

so with all that said when in the field would you carry a small sand bag with you to take care of that problem ?
even with that psg1 butt iam curious to know if i should still get a small sand bag when off the bench ?
and lastly i remember alot of guys saying they dont clean their rifles after every range session should i still oil the bore though ?

thanks for the heads up i appreciate all the help.... seems like i need allot of it

Re: unsure about a few things

When testing ammo off the bench,I use a leather sandbag that is made for the stock of a gun. It's sand filled and too heavy for field use. For field use, a poly filled bag like these http://www.triadtactical.com/Bean-Bags-Shooting-Rests/ is much lighter. There is no need to oil the bore after each range session unless you're having problems with rust. And...you still haven't shot those .4" groups for me yet....

Re: unsure about a few things

I have used the PSG-1 in the past (and my MSG-90 clone all the time) and I don't use a weak-hand support or grip on the buttstock at all. I have found that a rear "wedge" or "triangle" bag works well on the MSG-90 stock because you can slide the bag fore and aft to adjust slightly for height/point of aim. That said, any good sand bag or sock filled with poly pellets or something similar will work in that role. Aside from that, you can remove the rear swivel sling of the MSG stock and install a fixed swivel stud for use with an accushot monopod if you prefer that to a bag.

As for cleaning...NO...I don't clean after every range trip unless I have done a LOT more shooting than normal in one outing. No keeping oil in the bore either unless the rifle is going to be stored/not used for a long period of time (then I might end up cleaning it also). That said, I do keep the rifle/action lubed as appropriate.

thanks for your input ord.. I was hoping to hear from you while i was "in town"

the monopod thing sounds vary vary interesting if you could post the info on how to do this and where to get the monopods that will fit in my stock that would be pretty cool

I have not personally done this on mine, but I recall seeing a post on HKPro (IIRC) about someone doing this so that they could run an Accushot monopod on their rifle. It involved removal of the standard built-in HK rear sling swivel mount and fiberglassing/epoxying in a fixed rear stud. Then you just attach a standard stud-mounted monopod like the BT-01, BT-04, BT-05, etc. (whichever version best suits your needs). You might try running a search on HKPro to see if you can find the thread.

There are also some other swivel stud options/adapters designed for use on an AR handguard that you might be able to adapt to use in place of the rear swivel on the MSG-90 buttstock. Those adpaters have an adapter plate that the stud screws into and tightens down against the stock (imagine the use on a vented, free-float handguard for an AR, except used on the buttstock in place of the original HK unit). There isn't much room (length, width or height) in the small compartment below the adjustable buttplate assembly, but there is enough to get the job done without too much difficulty). If I was going to do it, I'd probably go the threaded stud/adapter plate route...but that's just me.
