Hey guys, I purchased the "Bushnell Banner Scope 6-18x50mm Adjustable Objective Multi-X Reticle" about a year ago and put it on my Remington 700 XCR. It's my first bolt gun, so the scope worked great for me until now.

I went to the range yesterday and really wanted to shoot past 200yds. The problem is that I really think this scope is only capable of 200yds. Believe me, for $130, I'm not complaining at all!

I think I'm going to put some birthday money together for something more capable this year. I'm thinking I can scrounge up about $400 for a new scope.

Do you guys think around $400 can get me something I can reach out to 1000yds with? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Upgrade Economically?

I bet an angled scope mount would extend the range of the scope. How much depends on the specs. of the round you're shooting and the internal adjustment available in the scope itself.

Re: Upgrade Economically?

So you found the coin to buy a $1500 dollar gun, then set a $150 scope on it...

Look at SWFA 10x HD or

Look at the Weaver Tactical 3-10x40 MIL/MIL scope, they are back on sale for $300 at Midway.

Bushnell Elite Tactical 5-15x40 is $400 at opticsplanet right now, the 15x would aid in getting you out further.

Re: Upgrade Economically?

For under $400 the regular Super Snipers are hard to beat. I've run a 10x on one rifle and 16x on another for a little while now and have been perfectly happy with them. I'd guess in the next month or so there will be some deals on used optics in the classified when the new SS scopes get delivered.

Run a SS 10x rear focus and use the rest of your budget for a quality set of 30mm rings. 10x is just fine for up to 1k yds.

I know it looks stupid, but what happened was I traided a well used Colt 1911 for the rifle and gave the guy $150 to throw in the rail and rings. He actually won the rifle in a match, his other rifles were all custom so he never even fired the XCR. I made out like a bandit in the trade. I only put like $300 cash into the other stuff on the rifle. He told me he didn't care if he lost out on it since he never paid for it anyway.

Well then all the more reason to put good glass on it. You have a very capable rifle which you paid very little for so splurge on a good scope.

Comb the classifieds here, check SampleList, etc. Bushnell 4200, Falcon Menace FFP, Leupold VX-2/3 are all scopes that show up with decent regularity in the FS section.

Everyone here is going to tell you the same 2 things: buy the best scope you can afford, buy once cry once.

I wasn't a believer until I wasted hundreds of dollars trying to go with the "value pick" that ultimately ended up getting tossed or collecting dust.

Re: Upgrade Economically?

Save your pennies until you can buy what you want. If you keep buying the cheap stuff you keep pissing up a tree and not getting what you want. Set a goal and save enough to get what you need.

Your right, that's what I'll have to do.

What would you guys say I should be looking at for a "perfect" long distance .308 rifle? I know it's mostly preference when you get up there, but if I wanted to get a scope that will be capable of the best a .308 can do, what should I be looking at? Are we talking arount $1,000 at that point?
