WASHINGTON – U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded a contract to Glock Inc. today to provide CBP law enforcement personnel the next generation standard duty handgun.
The contract is for up to $85 million over 10 years, which includes other DHS law enforcement components that have the option to purchase duty handguns through the contract.
CBP’s Law Enforcement Safety and Compliance Directorate led the extensive solicitation process to replace CBP’s current duty handgun.
“This contract provides CBP law enforcement personnel the latest in handgun technology and represents our commitment to providing the highest quality use-of-force tools and equipment to our law enforcement personnel who defend America’s frontline every day,” said Deputy Commissioner Robert E. Perez.
The solicitation process included independent performance testing by the National Institute of Justice laboratories, direct input from over 16,000 CBP law enforcement personnel and extensive field evaluations.
With the award of this contract, CBP intends to transition all law enforcement personnel from the current .40 pistol to a 9mm pistol by the end of Fiscal Year 2021.
As a component of CBP Operations Support, LESC’s mission is to optimize the safety and readiness, accountability, and operational performance of CBP law enforcement personnel by articulating use of force policy, establishing appropriate controls and standards and supplying the highest quality education and training, weapons and other tactical equipment.

The guns features were in response to extensive DHS wide surveys covering wants and needs of the field agents. The agents didn't pick the gun or the company, only the features. The competing guns were then tested independently by the NIJ.

The Glock 47 is essentially a Gen 5 Glock 17 with a G19 length dust jacket to use a shorter slide if need be ( got no idea why ). The forward cocking serrations and MRD ready slide further distinguish it from the standard G17.

The dumb ass lip on the magazines is to provide more purchase to rip it from the mag well if it doesn't drop free. Which is a real consideration if you are on quads patrolling the Imperial Sand Dunes for 10 hours a day. Sand tends to lock shit together.

More rounds in target = more badguys down. Longer slide = more sight radius = more rounds on target.

Typically things like this start with new hires at academy and trickle down to field agents.

Takes time to qual everyone up. Especially going from the LEM trigger to a striker fired trigger.

There will be many ND’s on the range and hopefully I’m wrong, but when you give 40,000 people a gun you have to pull trigger to release slide......some dummy is gonna have an ND at home.

The LEM P2000 we have now is sturdy and reliable. But the trigger is garbage. The gen5 trigger feels vague to me and really mushy compared to the wall you hit on the P2k. But its lighter and easier to manipulate imho.

Define “garbage.” It does what it’s intended to do. Ensure the trigger only goes off when you intend it. Under stress, with proper training, you won’t even feel it.

If you can’t shoot the LEM trigger, your fundamentals need work. It’s the equivalent to needing an under 1lb trigger on a precision rifle.

This is from someone who said the same thing. “Trigger sucks, that’s what I don’t shoot it well.”

Took many months of practice and figuring out what problems I had in my fundamentals and fixed them. Magically all the bullets stay in the 5 ring, with an occasional 4 ring.

This isn’t directed at you personally, but anyone who claims the trigger is the reason they don’t shoot this weapon well......has shitty fundamentals.

My experience with shooting is mostly 1911s and highpower/CZ clones. I kinda cheat with them and get the triggers as light and crisp as possible. I qualify marksman or expert with my P2000s LEM depending on how much I care that day.

The reason why I say the trigger is garbage is because it takes, IMHO of course, an undue amount of concentration to have a good trigger press. I realize that a duty gun isn't going to have the same trigger as my Tanfoglio or my 1911s. But he LEM trigger is pretty abysmal. I would have 100% rather had the standard DA/SA trigger group in it. The gen5 glock trigger is nothing stellar either, but it isn't nearly as bad IMHO as the LEM. The less someone has to focuse on the trigger, the more then can keep that sight alignment.

For reference, I shoot USPSA, 3 gun, and i used to shoot pistol team PPC. PPC is hard at 50 yards, i tried it once with a LEM P2000, it was hilariously bad. Back to back with my tanfo, and my score jumped like 300 points or something.

Totally agree on the comp side. This trigger ain’t worth shit on that side. You can still get your hits, but you won’t be fast about it.

I would have loved to have seen a P30L with LEM adopted as a duty weapon. Love that weapon. I’ll take a g47 though ?

My front sight broke on my first gun with about 15k. Probabky 5k into my new (to me) one, still fine. The triggers get smoother after 10k lol

Pistol optics have come a long way. Duty weapon will also have suppressor height sights for worst case situation.

On Glocks, for disassembly-- removing slide from lower receiver-- one must pull the trigger to ensure the striker is not loaded (cocked if you will for better understanding) before bumping the slide back that smidge and pulling the slide lock bar down to remove the slide.

I agree that this is a flaw and I am the dumbass with the ND with this procedure.
(Although in having weapon pointed in safe direction, I shot my wife's ex's car! Kinda enjoyed that actually)

I have ND'd a 12 gauge into a clearing barrel. Which was technically a safe direction lol, but it was embarrassing. Now, I make sure I clear shit more appropriately. Rofl

Where did you get that info? Considering the reputation the Border Patrol has cultivated for producing good shooters, I would be very surprised if that was the case.

All the internals are the same, and a standard G19 slide will fit on it, and standard G17 mags will fit. It isn't compatible with a standard G17 slide, that is it.

Really the 19 (and 23, 32) slide is the only compatible thing that isn't compatible among all of the G17 descendents.

G47 will likely not be available for commercial purchase.
