Rifle Scopes US Optics SR-8C- SPR Perfection!

A couple of years ago I built a MK12 Mod 1 SPR Type Rifle using the following parts:

RRA Lower with all Colt small parts including an A2/A4 Rifle Stock
Geissele SSA-E Trigger
LaRue "Stealth" Complete Upper that LaRue built with an 18" Lothar Walther Barrel, 1 in 8 twist, Wylde Chambered.
The Optic i have been using was a Leupold MK4 3-9 SPR Scope

I have been very happy with this rifle to say the least, However one night I was staying in a motel while on the road for work when some "pillars of our community" decided to gather outside my hotel room. That night I had my SPR with me so as a precaution I decided if I had to address these guys I would rather do it with a rifle then with the SiG P226 I CCW. This is when reality struck me… I removed the bipod from the rifle, seated a 30 rd mag loaded with M193, and dialed the glass down to its lowest setting- 3X…

I instantly knew this was no bueno! I didn't want to get into a gun fight in a hotel room with a 3X scope on my rifle! So I removed the scope (Thank you Mark LaRue), deployed my Troy sights, Mounted my SureFire M600 and called it good…

No one needed to be ventilated that night but I thought it was BS that I had to remove an optic from an AR-15 to use it as a QCB weapon!

I have found the solution- The US Optics SR-8C!

I now have this optic on my SPR and it is a true 1x with a Red Dot that can be used all the way to the highest setting (8X). The dot is as good as an Aimpoint which to me Aimpoint is the standard to judge a dot from. It has a Mil Based Reticle so I can range for distance as well. Now My SPR is what I always wanted it to be- An AR-15 type rifle that can be used for everything from CQB to long range precision shooting all with one optic!

Nice writeup. It always surprises me how much I do not know until I actually do something, then I learn butt quick. Good work in realizing the error in equipment before it was too late.

Man it's really cool to read what you experienced. First time I saw that scope my reaction was: "I gotta have it". The combination of 1-8x, dual reticle and USO classic durability was a clear cut case from the start. People I know told me it was stupid to pay so much money for it. To those guys I will say: "This scope totally rocks!" I am happy to read what guys like you write as it makes all the difference in the world using it when your life depends on it. The bullshit is not so relevant any longer.

I could not agree more. I use mine a lot coyote hunting and lately have found it works well in close quarters at 1x for coyotes, running or standing. The benefits of this optic for self defense or combat are clear but it is also a great hunting optic. People bitch about price but I say who else builds a TRUE one power (some call theirs a 1x but look through them both eyes open and you will see what I mean) USO took theirs to an independent testing facility and it was certified a true 1x. Also they have centering system to line up the second FP dot that no other manufacturer has available. Great optic for sure.

I would have gotten a mini dot sight and mounted above or at a 45 to the main optic. Seems like a valid concept judging by the sheer number os similar setups I've seen and seems like it would have good peripheral field of view to boot. But if a new USO works better for you, cool beans.

I considered keeping the MK4 and adding a Trijicon RMR in an off set mount but I don't like twisting the rifle back and forth while shooting and then doing reloads and other admin duties. For me, I wanted to stick with one optic that met my needs and the SR-8C does that. I also feel I stepped up in optical quality by going from Leupold to US Optics. The SR-8C seems brighter to me then the MK4 and the turrets and power ring of the US Optics are so much smoother then those on the Leupold. Don't get me wrong, the MK4s are great but I feel the US Optics is at a higher level of quality and engineering.

I didn't need the 8 power, but ordered the SR-4C today. This is my first U.S. Optic.

I just wanted to throw something out, an illuminated scope functions a lot like a red dot at close range. Excellent for both eyes open shooting magnified or not. Learned this with the ACOGs years back.
