NF is great scope, bu USO lets you custom the scope exactly the way you want it in every little details.

If you can, find someone local and put your hands on one of each. A trusted friend recommended buying a Nightforce when I first got serious in this arena. I used it for a couple years and have since sold it. They are great scopes, but I prefer my SN-3 USO. Don't let hype guide you. One or the other might just work better for you.

Once you get to this level of money and quality, it's more about personal preference than anything else. You have to decide for yourself what's better...

You need to look at them side by side. They are both great scopes. I bought USO after looking. I keep on looking and really like the Hensholt. But I bought a scope last month and it was another SN3.
When I was at RO a couple of years ago I like the F1 NF scope LL had on one of his rifles.

The above question raises a good point. If you are a SFP fan then NF is the way to go. If you prefer FFP Id look at USO.

The above question raises a good point. If you are a SFP fan then NF is the way to go. If you prefer FFP Id look at USO.

I've used both and prefer USO. Great customer service and an optic built to your specs. You can't go wrong with USO.

Thanks for the suggestions. Both NSA and USO are rock solid.....USO kills you with the ability to change and customize everything on a scope. Another idea is to buy the NSA package with the Barrett bors computer on it. Whole rig is about 2500 plus a mount.....
Basically I just want a scope with great glass....sweet ileum. Reticle and the abili to rapidly change target distances with an elevation turret that is very easy to use. The whole rifle is about 8k so i cant put some crap glass on it. Going from an SB to something of questionable quality just won't do. 2k is about what I would like to spend but will spend more if I absolutely have to in order to get what I want.

Get an IOR 3.5-18x50 35mm. Can have it in FFP, SFP and mil/mil or moa/moa.

Never even considered an ior scope......how do you like yours? What model? Ileum reticle? Zero stop on the turrets? I basically want a scope like a leopold m4lr/t 4.5x-14.5x-50 but with zero stop on the turrets. Closest thing i can find is a Nxs scope but i can't get my hands on one around here and i live in Houston. Nobody stocks them.

I have the 3.5-18x50 with 35mm tube. It does have illum(buttons instead of knob) and zero stop on the turrets. IOR uses German Schott glass(considered the best) while NF uses Japanese, no idea what USO uses for glass.
This scope was on my .260 and now sit's on my .223 while i wait to get my .260 back.

Adam, the IOR is the way to go for the $$$, no wait, better clarity than NF and better glass quality, it is MIL/MIL FFP available, and has been good short of one model they had issues with.... USO is minimum a 12-20 week wait.... if you are good

Sold all 6 NF and now run New IORs, they are awesome scope I never ran an older IOR but the new ones Rock, allot of peoples opinions on IORs are with the older scopes and they should really look at the new scopes IOR now have I think they would change their minds. Val and Scott are good people too!
Around 2 weeks we are getting the new 12-52x56 in our shop for us to ring out and I will have one of those too.

The USO wait can be substituted for just buying one from a retailer. Like midwayusa, got mine for 2240$ All the exact accessories i wanted. Ergo parallax, U.S. M40 Windage adjustment, EREK knob, Gap milling reticle.

If you're looking for phenomenal glass, then you probably won't like the USO. I tried one and it wasn't for me. Just bought another NF.

I owned one, and my statement is not absurd. There are some people on here that claim USO's stuff is on par with S&B, etc....if that's the case then they must be hit or miss because mine was definitely not there optically. Other than that, I liked the scope a lot. But I can't justify $2400 on a scope that had worse resolution than a NF. And this isn't just an arbitrary 'it looks worse' complaint...I noticed that I couldn't see the small red dot in the middle of my Shoot N C targets that I was using at 200 yards. With my NF, at the same magnification, I could clearly make out the small red dot in the middle of the Shoot N C. Two other people, who are pistol shooters and had no idea what a NF or USO is, looked through both scopes and agreed with me (I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me).
My other complaint was the vague #1 windage knob, it did not have very defined clicks. Once again, I was left disappointed- I honestly wanted to convince myself that USO was up to par after reading a lot of conflicting information online, but I'm back to NF.

Stop making shit up. I didn't just casually "see a dud", I spent $2400 of my hard earned money and got a scope that had the optics of a $400 Leupold. I'd recommend staying away from a company that thinks that is acceptable. I was left sorely disappointed, and like I said they must be hit or miss because some people (like you) think they have better optics than a NF. If you had looked at my SN3 TPAL next to my NXS you would have to be blind to not think the NF was obviously clearer. We're not talking 'brighter' or 'more contrast', we're talking I can't see shit at 200 yards with my USO that I can with my NF.
USO always seems to get a free pass on this forum when someone says something unpleasant about them, but I'm not going to back down because you think I should. I spent the money, tried one out, and would not recommend the company unless they start doing something different.

I didn't say you casually saw a dud, i said "If I saw a dud." I'm not even implying you casually saw a dud, i realize you had a bad experience with a company and your disappointed. I was just saying that if i saw a nightforce or owned a nightforce that was in that state it would not be my incentive to tell people to stay away from them based on one bad product. Did you contact U.S. Optics about your problem?

No I didn't, because it's not really quantifiable. What would I say "the glass on your scope appears to have no defects other than the fact it's not as clear as I was expecting?". I suppose they might have taken a look at it, but I really don't know what their response would have been. The glass had no flaws or imperfections, it just wasn't what I was expecting for the price tag on these scopes.
Like I said, everything else about the scope (besides the vague windage knob) was good.

I have a USO and a NF- IMO, glass is pretty comparable between the two. Given they are not the same spec, I don't feel comfortable making a judgement as to which one is more clear but I am confident in saying they aren't that far away from each other. I'd certainly not say either one looks like a $400 leupold. Or even a $1300 Mk 4.
Anyway, to the OP- decide what you want for options and what your price limit is, then search out the scope to fit your needs. At this high level of optics, differences in which is "better" are often times a matter of perception, or even a matter of how well the feature set applies to the user.
Between the two, the best thing USO has going for it is the plethora of options so you can truly have it built the exact way you want to suit your needs. Best thing for the NF is that you can get them in SFP for only a few hundred more than a comparable Mk 4 if SFP is what you're looking for. Also no wait time is pretty nice.
Owning both, I cannot really relate to someone who's unhappy with either. But in the long run, the NF will be sold and replaced with a USO that is spec'ed out exactly how I want it. Not because I'm unhappy with it, but just because I prefer a set-up exactly how I want it. If I could get the USO and keep the NF as a back-up, I would... but I'm not swimming in cash... Or I could just wait longer. I really like the idea of a scope on hand I could drop onto a new rifle I buy on a whim.

Between the two, the best thing USO has going for it is the plethora of options so you can truly have it built the exact way you want to suit your needs. Best thing for the NF is that you can get them in SFP for only a few hundred more than a comparable Mk 4 if SFP is what you're looking for. Also no wait time is pretty nice.
Owning both, I cannot really relate to someone who's unhappy with either. But in the long run, the NF will be sold and replaced with a USO that is spec'ed out exactly how I want it. Not because I'm unhappy with it, but just because I prefer a set-up exactly how I want it. If I could get the USO and keep the NF as a back-up, I would... but I'm not swimming in cash... Or I could just wait longer. I really like the idea of a scope on hand I could drop onto a new rifle I buy on a whim.

Crap....this just confused the living crap out of me. I am considering trading my SB short dot straight up for a USO 1.8x-10x-37 with ergo m40 turret and green lit reticle. Both scopes are about the same in retail price. I want to be able to shoot from 100 to 1000m and do it easily. The glass from USO is supposed to be great....seems like everyone has their opinion. I could buy a new Nxs scope but would spend a lot of time and some more money swapping scopes. Does this sound like a good deal to you guys? It does to me so far.

There aren't as many bad reviews of USO as some people would like to lead on. There are a couple here and there. Every company produces lemons. I wouldn't hesitate to get the USO you have listed. In fact i would love one to put on my SPR, just can't afford it. Took me an entire year to get my SN-3. Noone likes to get a dud but if i got one i would rather it be USO than anyone else considering they're customer service is unmatched. Sickness also has a point S&B is considered the best. And you likely would be disappointed with the clarity comparison. Then again i believe once you hit a pricepoint all glass is really good, and it depends on the eyes. Everyone has their preference.

To be fair, as impressive as this video is it doesn't address the issues that seem to be brought up about USOs. Usually if I find complaints about them it is in regards to tracking or the EREK knob going tits up. This is coming from someone who has bought 3 SN-3s so I'm not trying to take a dig here. I just research everything that I buy very thoroughly.

I don't see how that doesn't get caught in inspection. I'm in agreement with you thats what i've read too. My experience so far has been great as i've said. I understand the company isn't perfect. I'm not trying to defend them all out. I just want to press to the OP going USO isn't a bad choice at all.

It's actually kind of funny now.
I own two USO's. I use a Razor on my personal work rifle. We have MkIV's on our other work rifles. I have compared them side by side with NXS and S&B.
Glass clarity is the absolute last decision point on the list when you are talking about this level of optic. Across the board the glass quality is going to be what I would consider "good". Durability first, tracking a close second. Turret and Reticle features tie for third. When I look at glass quality, I look at low-light usability first. Then I worry about clarity, color reproduction, chromatic aberration, etc.
When I am looking at my camera lenses it's a bit different.
USO is not the clearest glass in the lineup. At least not the glass that is in my SN-3. It's not at the same level as an S&B. This really isn't a dig on the scope because it really like it and it's not in the same price point as the S&B PMII series. It is on part with the NXS series which is appropriate.
When you are looking at the scopes you have to remember your eye is different than mine. Some scopes are brighter than others, but sacrifice a little contrast. Some have CA that is more apparent. That doesn't make it "bad" glass because in the end we are just worried about putting a "leetle teeny boolit" where we want it. As long as the glass supports that goal in the price range you are willing to spend, then it's "acceptable".
The Vortex Razor HD and Nightforce F1 are good values in the upper tiers of scopes. However you are going to pick off the menu and there are no substitutions. This ain't Burger King.
USO is the way to go if you can't find what you want. They will build you a bombproof scope the way you want it. The added benefit is that if your needs change along the way, they can probably re-build it adding or removing features. My SN-3 may be going back shortly to change some things and update the illumination.
The best advice is always to get your hands on the scopes and see what you like. If you can find someone who owns them all, their advice will be invaluable because their information will not be clouded by the need to justify their purchase.
I highly doubt you will be disappointed with either a USO, NXS or Vortex Razor.

I've sent variables back for that reason before when the picture turned to blurry shit at max power (leupolds). Lemons happen.

Adam, your question was in regard to illumination. If its beween the uso and nf, my vote would go to the uso. The nf has good illumination but, you have 1 handy setting without having to remove the cap and adjusting a tiny potentiometer. The uso, (mine at least) has an 11 position knob and the clarity of the illumination across the entire reticle is fantastic! As for the glass, they are both good.

If I trade for the USO I get at least on paper exactly what i need and want and don't spend a dime. Just have to keep my fingers crossed that the scope i trade for isn't beat to he'll or have a problem with it.

So often on this forum the glass is the first consideration as if the function of a scope were bird watching and not putting a "leetle teeny boolit" where we want it.
There are some good tough scopes available to you if you shop. Figure out what you need and you should be able to get one that suits you.

That is exaactly what led me to USO when I first got one. Here's USO's lifetime warranty in a nutshell-"If it says USO on it, we'll stand behind it"
I got great support from USO on three horsetraded scoped before I ever bought one new.
I have compared USO, NF, S&B, Premier and Hensoldt at teh saem time on the same hazy target and nothing convinced me to switch. The NF seemed that day to have a little clearer glass (dead tree on ridgeline at 800+ yds, hazy atmosphere), but the USO had the best FOV and a more natural color to the sight picture.
I love my USO's, and I love the service they provide. Call NF and ask if they can swith the windage for you over to the other side of the scope....
NF's I've played with have a very picky diopter adjustment. The illumination cannot be adjusted without tools. The whole objective turns when changing powers.
USO has had a scope certificate on the prize table of seemingly every precision competition of any size that I have attended.
I had sushi and BS'd with one of USO's top guys last weekend, because they were at our match they sponsored, and came to dinner with a bunch of the RO's and competitors.
I had a concern about a new scope they built for me, and he took it back with him to get checked out.
I'm rambling, so I'm gonna punch out and get some zzz's now....
