My team is sponsoring me and one of our other snipers for the 2011 US SWAT Sniper Championship held in Tulsa, OK. The event preceeds the US SWAT National Championship in October. I've been to their website, but they don't have much posted. Anyone compete last year or have any more info on it? Past COF's, etc...

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

My partner and I shot it last year, it was alot of fun, very hot, demanding courses of fire.... and alot of competitors catching IV's between events. This year being in October should be alot better. I believe there were 6 events, shots out to 300, most targets were moa. My advice is be in excellent shape their is a fair amount of physical activity.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

From what I have found it does sound physically demanding. We're both in good shape, but still prepping for it. Thanks for the info on 300 yds. and MOA targets. We were wondering what the max distance would be.

Any info on courses of fire from last years event would be greatly appriciated.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

I ran the Sniper portion the last two years. The competition is a mirrored event, two teams running side by side. No shots will be longer then 300 yards, and that is the start of the run and gun stage. Most stages are limited to 125 yards and under. Lots of forced shooter spotter communication, I would make sure both weapons have good optics. Stages like, mine field, attic hide all require precision shots on drop turners with small targets. Wind isn't an issue since the range is a tunnel with trees on both sides, but you do need to know your exact dope. Good luck, T.J.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

You won't need a range finder for this comp. The long shots are on a KD rangeb (300 yards), everything else is within 150 yards.
I would do lots of unsupported shooting, shooting off barricades, out of position shooting to prep.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

This sounds like one of the more Practical LE Sniper courses I've heard about.

Never understoon why LE Officers would need to shoot 1000+ yards.

Thanks T.J. PILLING for all the info. I'm assuming they will be sending out the course descriptions in July. We've never shot this competition so I was just doing some recon.

When you practice or compete at 1000 yds., the 100 yd. targets seem huge. Not only do you learn more about you and your rifle, but you also build a great deal of confidence.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

1shot; I agree to a point. I've done a lot of long range shooting. Mostly 1000 yard matches with a service rifle. I also know there is a differance between LE & Military Sniping.

I'm of the belief that often LE don't have the luxury of spinning knobs on scopes. What I did was sight my rifle in for 250 yards, and doing so was capable of hitting head size targets to 300 yards without touching the knobs. The is little wind to worry about at normal LE Counter/Sniper Distance.

Take a gander at the USAMU Counter/Sniper Guide, put out when they were running counter/sniper schools for LE. They recommended the best training for the LE sniper was varmint hunting, shooting PDs. The ideal is you get the angles, differant ranges, differant conditions, small targets, and targets that have a tendency to disappear before one can range and adjust.

It's a differant ball game then Military Sniping.

But thats not to take away from the skills you gain by long range shooting.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

KraigWY, I understand what you are saying and also agree with you to a point. Military vs. LE Sniping is like compairing NASCAR and Indy car racing. You race cars in both, however they are different enough that you can't crawl out of one car into the other without some training specific to that style. The extra "outside the box" training adds overall tools or skills to help you improve. That being said, if you are a LE Sniper and learn the methods, tactics and techniques of the Military Sniper or vise versus, one only enhances their ability in their current profession.

LE Snipers also are used for operations such as surveillance of outdoor grow operations and clandestine meth labs, in addition to border patrol ops, etc... that may require military style tactics and techniques. And in the current theater of military operations some of the LE styles and techniques are employed in the urban settings. I agree that they are different in general, however attaining a good level of proficiency in both can't hurt.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

I saw the owners of the event at the Shot Show. They were staking up sponsors and working the booths. I know they had some issues that slowed them up this year like change of ownership of the facility since the owner committed suicide. Looks like everything is a go and they should start posting soon.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

I competed for the last 2 years. I ended up taking 6 IV's through the week last year (also competed in the SWAT Comp). It was tough physically in the heat, especially when in armor and being down there for both events drained me. They didn't really provide shade until the end as they were gearing up for the SWAT portion, we had to walk to our stage of fire and sit out in the open before it was your time to run. IIRC temps ran up around 108+ in heavy humidity. Last year was not really a fun time for me.
The competition will test your positional shooting and communication. Good Luck, I am not sure if we will return this year or not. My partner and I are not too fond of the organizer, but TJ is kick ass...LOL We are looking at another competition down in San Anotonio this year put on by The Lone Survivor Foundation about the same time as this one. Maybe we'll do both. We'll see.

Re: US SWAT Sniper Championship

It was a pleasure meeting and competiting against all that were there. I had a great time this year, mostly because of the sportsmanship and commradery between the competitors. We even hung out with our rivals, the Canadians...LOL...great guys. Congrats to all that competed.

A special thanks to all those involved in setting up and running the events. You were short handed and overworked, but for the most part got it done (my only complaint is the excessive wait and cancelling of 1 event on day 2).

Go to the link and email/call Dr. Jack O'Connor and he'll keep you in the loop for next years competition. There is SWAT Team event that follows the sniper event if interested as well.

Roger that. Thanks.
