The one on ebay is a little out of my price range. There is also one on autotrader. I guess they are out there if you really want to look, and then spend the money.

Re: used military humvee

The "military grade humvee" is nothing but a H1 Hummer. They get about 6-8 mpg unless you send it out to be up-armored.

I'm pretty sure that you won't get a "surplus" Hummer because they are completely broken down prior to sales. It would be cheaper to just buy a used H1 somewhere.

I bought my Hummer brand new when they were going for over 6 figures. Now you can find really nice ones in the neighborhood of $40k. I should've waited but hey...I didn't know that the price would drop so low over the course of a decade.

Also, H1s are not cheap to maintain. It helps a lot if you know how to turn a wrench but there are things like the CTIS which can be a royal pain in the ass. Parts also take a while to order because the H1 is no longer manufactured for the public so you might have to wait in line behind the military. Parts are also ridiculously expensive.

If you're not going to take it off road and abuse it at least a little, don't buy one. Save your money and buy an expensive street vehicle; it will be cheaper in every way.

The original H1 Hummer/HMMWV, both military and civilian, were built on the same assembly line at the AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana. The line was the same all the way down to the interior, where the civilian vehicles got gloss paint and leather, and the military vehicles got steel chairs and a three-color camo job. Given the same model year, they're the same underneath.

For a quick down-n-dirty on maintenance and modification, check out www.redhummer.com.

Re: used military humvee

There was a guy here in colorado who knows them quite well. He runs a website bluehummer.com if I remember right. I was looking into a surplus H1 several years ago and he ran down what all the changes were for the civilian models. The bottom line was it was better to go with the civi model unless it will strictly be an offroad 4 wheeler that will just get torn up.

Re: used military humvee

What I was told is that humvees made after 1995 are destroyed after and do not go into DRMO auctions. I called Ft Sam in san antonio and they stated the same thing.
hope this helps

Re: used military humvee

I would not be surprised if they start surfacing in quantity as they are phased out. Just recalling when I was a kid seeing the military jeeps in boxes sold in the back of the gun rags. I think at one time Brigade Quartermaster or US Calvary was selling them too.

Think it would be a much larger box (crate) to ship a Humvee.
