Hey guys, a friend of mine and i went to the range today to sight in my 700 AAC and his LWRC REPR earlier this afternoon, and noticed the guy a few benches down. He was shooting another 700 in .308 (we had spoken to him a bit throughout the day) but using his range bag that was full of a few boxes of 12 gauge slugs and .308 federal as a rifle rest rather than a bipod/rifle rest/sandbags.

A while later my buddy and i had a discussion, is that an unsafe idea or was he alright in doing that? Would he be in any danger of rounds going off from the concussion of the gun or anything? I dunno just kinda racking our brains a little bit about it. I've done it a few times with a .22 or a .17 but nothing bigger than that. Any thoughts?

Btw sorry if this is in the wrong area, i figured it was a gear-related question.

Yeah the only thing I can say is it would be safer not to. I can think of a lot more stable stuff to shoot off of than a bag full of ammo boxes anyways, like sweatshirts, sand filled socks, shooting bags, a bipod etc.

It's safer not to? Jesus grow a pair.

If your vagina feels better use your purse full of tampons as a rifle rest

Isn't a damn thing wrong with what that guy did.

If the concussion would set the rounds in the pack off, wouldn't it do the same with the rounds in the magazine???

Lots of people on here looking for solutions to problems that don't exist

Yep, it is save and if you have bag that is re-enforced it is much more portable than the bench rest, butt bag, etc method.

I have had days and times where I was getting MOA off of a bench rest, switched to the range bag and closed up to .3

Best shooter I ever saw uses his range bag off of a bench and his backpack in the field. He owns not 1 bi-pod to my knowledge.

FYI his personal trick is to drill a hole in a fifty cent piece, hang it to a paperclip bent and taped to a target stand so it is sideways and cuts it in half @ 100yd. First round, first shot of the day out of a clean rifle. (Sendero special in 300WM)
