I want to build a USMC sniper replica using a unertl 10X i have. I want it to be as authentic as possible also plan to use it ocasionally as a target rifle. I need some suggestions and opinions on which is the best rifle. Plus the pros and cons between the M40A1 vs the M40A3

There are plenty of places to look on here for each rifle. There is a M40a1 and a3 build guide to help you with what you need to build each rifle.
As of which is the best rifle...well thats a personal choice. Both of them are good rifles. The a1 is lighter then the a3. What do you plan on using your rifle for?
You are probably going get a lot of different answers on this one.

I have quite a few USMC type spec builds. M40 with green Redfield, M40A1 with MST 100, M40A5 with USMC S&B,KAC MK 11, M1A match,etc. The one that gets used is the M40A1. I actually like the MST 100. Hunt with it. It is simple, efficient, accurate. BDC reticule is accurate once you get the load right. I like simple rifles, less to adjust is better for me. I have no need for an adjustable LOP or cheekpeice as I am the only user. JMO

There are at least 2 M40A1 clones with return stocks currently for sale and a M40A3 built by eric reid in the for sale section right now, just saying. Also picking a rifle is completly a personal thing, the M40A1 is lighter and much better for positionall shooting and would make a better hunting setup, the M40A3 is a better choice for bench style because of the vertical grip and the extra weight, not to mention the adj. cheek. I advise you to pick which fits YOU the best rather than what everyone else likes though, you will be much happier in the long run.

A return stock, is a stock that was returned from the USMC and at some point used by a sniper, it is a collectors piece, if you want a rifle to ooohhh and awwww at on a display get the return stock, but if you plan on being tough on the rifle, just get a HTG M40A1 clone stock and you won't cringe every time you scrape it on a rock during recoil. However if I did have a return stock I would use it like it was intended, that would be like having a 1968 Shelby 427 that you never took over 35 mph.,,,

dangerous path you are on...get ready to say good bye to all ur free time doing research and funds once you know what you want...I almost have everything, just need to save for the barrel and I'm sending everything off to be put together.
then, once you get a rifle done, you realize you also want the other one, (I now doing a M40A3 clone, just doing it in 260 as I have too many 308's...oxymoron??

It is the only variation made available to the public (which I believe you recieved) from Unertl. It is Unertl's "Tacticl" version that has UNERTL-10X where the real one says USMC SNIPER with the T serial number. They were made from leftover parts from the scopes issued to the USMC. In that regards, they are the same as the real deal. US Optics MST 100 is the same scope, only better (glass and internal spring changed for better tracking) and is labeled USMC SNIPER on the side with USO in the logo. USO got the contract to refurbish the scopes in the late 90's. LowLight did a comparison of the 2 but I cant find it. The UNERTL is more valuable to many due to it not being remade (company out of business). USO makes a good replica, but that is all it is, esp since they keep making more and more, which simple economics results in lower and lower prices. I have one. They are very nicely built, but I am pist they keep getting released because at that price, I have it for historical value, not its ability to compete with S&B or USO other stuff or even Hendsoldt.

Forgot to add, if you decide to build a M40A1 and want to sell those rings that are on the scope you got (which are correct for an early M40A3 build), let me know. I am looking to get some with the inserts.
