Rifle Scopes USO or Premier

Re: USO or Premier

This glass being brighter stuff is so subjective. I shoot from a covered bench 90% of the time, so take my opinion for what its worth. I have shot with Premier, USO and S&B. More with USO than the others, but IMO, unless I can see the scope body itself, or the reticle gives it away, I could not tell you which optic I am using from the image quality. They are all excellent and beyond what is needed for shooting targets at range.

Re: USO or Premier

I don't think that you guys realize that it doesn't matter where the glass comes from, and I have no problem in telling you from who I get the raw materials from, Schott. I have said this till I am blue in the face, but nobody listens, you people would rather waste the time beating a dead horse.

The difference in the glass comes from the grinding, polishing, coatings, and the quality of the two halves of an objective being glued together.

The machines; I can turn out better quality lenses from my 1960's RL Strausbaugh 4 spindle than many can with a $2MIL Loh machine, it is all in how you use them. Now I WILL tell you that with the Loh you can make about 20X more lenses in the same amoount of time it take me on the 4 spindle machine.

When I first started working with my Father back in the 90's the very first thing I learned was how to make lenses. I was taught by a guy named Ted Talemantez formerly from Autonetics(sp?)at Rockwell Aerospace here in CA. He has about 50 years experience making lenses, in fact even stuff for the Hubble, the space shuttle and several other huge projects. Ted introduced me to Arnie Bazinsky of Schott Glass back then and we have been using them ever since.

I have outsourced a few products to a company in Germany called POG, they are the only ones that have worked with me on price and my small quantites on roof prisms. As soon as we go into full production, the business will most likely go to a rather large company on the East coast....and NO, I'm not going to tell you who!

John, you must admit that it helps when you start with the top of the line glass though

All of the "confidential" other work does help differentiate the different scope companies and when you do it in-house you tend to have much better control lense to lense than when out-sourcing. All of the scopes mentioned are better than 99% of the people will ever need. That said it comes down to who offers the reticle, elevation range, power range etc etc that YOU like. That will be what makes a good scope for YOU.

Chances are, you would be wrong.

Thanks for the info John and being willing to beat that horse one more time. Besides, he may have deserved it.

So John, am I right in reading you actually grind them in house? If so, that is pretty fantastic and definitely makes it "Made in the USA" in my book. Do you coat in-house too?

Here is your answer Cartman.

John divulged the source of his glass, so I am down one so far, feel free to ask other manufacturers to see if they would divulge that info; I can wait and see if I am wrong with my chances claim. One down but one does not count as most.

Re: USO or Premier

IMO when you get up to the very best glass it tough to tell and can vary from person to person depending on their eyes.

So while glass is tough to tell...USO does beat the competition in every other category you can argue about. Yet people always go back to the glass debate.

There is a lot more to a scope then the glass!

Re: USO or Premier

From the scopes I've compared and I have compared a few. USO is better in low light with the same objective size as the competition.
