Being playing with this idea for a work knife lately. In the summers I work on the drilling rigs, and a knife is necessary for cutting open the bags of chemicals that need to be added to the mud system. There are usually a couple of knifes around the rig, but they are generally abused and garbage, and most of the time misplaced. So I would like to have my own. I was thinking of the neck knife style because I am wearing coveralls, so I have no belt to attach it to. I know if I leave a knife in my pocket I will forget it, I always do with stuff I leave in my pockets out there. I figure I won't forget it if it's on my neck. For safety reasons, I will not be wearing it while I am on the rig floor (on the very off chance that it slips out of my coveralls and gets wrapped around a spinning peice of equipment = decapitation). I will be wearing it only when I am adding chemicals to the mud system. Also will be getting a "break away" lanyard system, just for the extra safety factor.

So the criteria is:
Cheap (preferably under $30, consider everything under $100)
Durable (it will be abused, and will get chemicals on it)
must have a proper sturdy sheath
light weight

Any help appreciated.

A CRKT in a kydex sheath....they lock it tight and stay put....personally I think you would be better off wearing it on an arm....upper preferably....easy to always get to, low profile so it can always be worn, out of the way, and NO risk of decap.

What kind of size blade/size handle are you looking for?

Edge type? serrated, tanto, wharncliff, bowie, dagger, etc?

Big and heavy glove friendly, or small/compact and light?

Here is one that is good for small utility cuts. For the price, buy 2, and throw them out when they get worn out.

You can find them cheaper from retailers.

If you want to go glove friendly, something like this would work.

If you want a more aggressive design, there are tons of options.
The Izula is a popular realistic EDC fixed blade. I know of some guys that can make you sheathes for them, too.

Re: Utility neck knife

I don't want the knife to be too big. Preferably a blade under 3". Don't want the handle to be too large either, try and keep the whole length of the knife under 6".

I'm pretty flexible on the type of blade. It's mostly going to be used for slicing open bags of chemicals. These bags are fairly durable, made of a thick paper with a plastic lining. Bags would be similar to dry mix concrete bags. Not interested in a tanto, I want something that is easy and quick to sharpen.

Don't want it to be too big and heavy, but I will be using it while wearing gloves.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I will look into those!

Re: Utility neck knife

The reason why I am going with a fixed blade with a neck sheath or that mercharness is because I always lose stuff in my coverall pockets. I have about 12 pairs of coveralls which I rotate through, and I always forget things in my pockets. I am trying to avoid this.

I am actually currently in Butte for school.

A neck knife it that role is a terrible idea.

Can you wear your own belt on the outside of your coveralls? </div></div>

No belt, but I'm starting to think wearing this under my coveralls might be the best solution: http://www.moderncombativesystems.com/docs/shop_mercharness.htm

It would definitely be safer and more secure then a neck knife.

Re: Utility neck knife

I have one of the Cold Steel neck knives, and it is decent and the price is right in range of what you're looking for but I think the handle is slim and hard to control.

I prefer my Emerson La Griffe for a neck knife due to it being much lighter and less profile width, but with the thumb hole for full control. You can usually find it for $70. Depending on the thickness of your gloves you're wearing, it should work just fine with the thumb hole. My finger fits snug but acceptable with Mechanix gloves on.

Me personally, I carry an Emerson folder for defensive purposes and also a cheap (~$15 for a 4 pack at most hardware stores) locking folding utility razor with serrated blades I get from Lowe's. For the purpose you're talking about, I think the razor is the way to go as I'm sure those bags will dull the hell out of a regular blade. I know this isn't what you're looking for, but a suggestion none the less. If you happen to lose one, well, no big loss there unless it was the last of the pack.

Re: Utility neck knife

Top's Scalpel will work better for you, and the sheath can be affixed to your overalls. Remember, a neck knife takes two hands to deploy, one on the sheath, one on the knife if it is hanging, one if you don't mind the 'necklace' jamming against your neck when you deploy it one handed.
The Scalpel is easy to use with gloves on too as it has a fairly full sized slim handle. The blade is short and thick and works killer for cutting bags of stuff open

OT, but I just got done researching what is and isnt legal with knives, its worse than with guns. For instance in Ca, you can carry a 36" katana but it has to be open carry. But you cant carry a folder open more than a certain length and that pertains to; if only the clip is exposed then its still open carry, and thats a felony. A fixed blade concealed is a felony, will a concealed pistol, without a permit is a misdemonr. Then their is the subject of balisongs, switchblades, dirks, daggers etc.

Anyways what I am getting at, op make sure you research your locale and state laws before carrying anything, you mind end up in more trouble than carrying a gun illegaly.

Re: Utility neck knife

I recently got the neck knife idea myself. The other day I was in my local gun shop and spotted a Benchmade Bone Collector. I really liked the knife itself: small but not too small, light weight, textured G-10 scales, D2 steel.
The sheath was a leather wrap-around style belt sheath with a snap retainer. The fit wasn't great and I'm not a big fan of the "belt knife". I really liked the knife though, so for $68, I bought it and made a neck sheath out of some scrap Kydex I had left over from another project.
Here's the knife with both sheaths.

And the one I made for it:

This may not be your ideal knife, but the point is, for under $10, you can make a Kydex neck sheath for pretty much any knife you think will meet your needs.
As far as cheap goes, you can pick up a bait knife at any tackle shop for about $3. Blade is serrated, about 3"-4" long, sharp as hell, and if it gets dull, you can throw it away and buy another. Just make a sheath for it. Even buy half a dozen of the same knife so the sheath you make will fit them all.
As far as the decapitation risk some people have mentioned, why not use a break-away quick release buckle like you find on dog collars? That way if you do get hung up, you loose the knife, not your head.
