Due to open carry restrictions in some state parks and/or not wanting to broadcast my firearm while camping or hiking...I'm looking for a particular type of utility pouch. I am trying to find a utility pouch that I can mount to the side of my pack (molle) that is large enough to stow a full size handgun with light. So far the only thing I have been able to find is a pouch from Specter...

I'm wondering if something similar exists with some sort of way to keep the pistol from flopping around inside? Maybe hook/loop interior so one of those elastic universal holster things can be mounted. Does anyone know if such a pouch exists or know of one that would work better for this purpose? I've been googling this for about an hour but all I'm getting is chi-com airsoft crap :(.

As usual, thanks for any and all advice!

Side pocket doesn't sound very accessible. Consider Hill People Gear Kit Bag (chest pack) or go with something like like a Kifaru Belt Pouch on the waist belt of your pack. The HPG Kit Bags are ready to go, the belt pouch will take a little customizing. I like the smallest versions of both.

What do you consider full size? I use a Condor Map Pouch and it just holds a Glock 29.
1911 or USP w/light is what it would need to hold. But Condor does have a wide selection of pouches, how has their gear held up in your use?

You bring up an excellent point. If I hit the emergency release on one side I can swing the pack in front quickly with a pouch orientated/facing me. But that doesnt take into effect zipper time; either way your ideas would be MUCH quicker. It seems the kifaru belt pouch only has two points of contact, how secure is their mounting system?

Price is the only turn off for me with that item :(

The Condor Map Pouch has held up well for me in the four years I've been using it. It's attached to the belt of the DaKine hydration pack I use for mountain biking. It might not be big enough for you though.

The Kifaru Belt Pouch is made for their packs. You are correct that it has only 2 attachment points when installed on the waist belt, but it is certainly not coming off unless you want it to. The small pouch that I like is too small for 5" guns but I have carried a variety 3-4" guns in it with no problems. It is very low profile and pretty fast to draw from. Unzip, grab and draw. It would take their medium pouch for a full sized (5") auto and it is significantly larger than the small. I haven't tried the medium, so I can't tell you much more about it.

I've ran through a dozen different pouches trying to find this same solution only to come up disappointed until I broke down and got a HPG Kit Bag. It is the best solution for backwoods hiking.

I've never liked the idea that if I drop my pack to take a rest or whatever that I leave weapon in a pouch when doing so. With the kit bag, you can drop the pack and your weapon, and primary valuables, stay with you.

Are holsters completely out of the question? Some inside the wast are very comfortable. I'm someone that can't drive with my wallet in my back pocket because I feel it and it annoys me.

kifaru koala pouch?
also, hill people gear has a chest mount pouch if you are open to that sort of carry, not sure of the name.
Those are both really good options. I have never really looked into a chest pack before.

I don't think an IWB would be comfortable while hiking. Maybe if it was a small gun, but not a USP w/ light.

I have always used an SR25/.308 mag pouch, contains it well and allows you quick access.
That's an AWESOME idea but I need it to be fully concealed :(

I've gone several routes prior to getting the Kit Bag.

Started with using the Gcode RTI molle mount on my Kifaru waist strap, then switching the holster to a belt mount when I dropped my pack. It is quick and easy to swap the holster on those platforms, but keeping the belt holster under the waist belt of the pack was uncomfortable and the gun is difficult to conceal with it mounted in either spot.

Moved on from there to trying several different pouches on the waist belt of my pack. Just couldn't quite get it right.

The Koala is a nice piece of kit but is quite a bit larger than the Recon Kit Bag and the original Kit Bag. I use the Recon because it has molle and I can attach additional pouches for carrying AR mags when in the bush or my cell/GPS when hiking with the family.
