Varget and barrel temp

I anyone getting their barrel to heat up quick when running Varget? For some reason after about 5 rounds I am starting to get a fairly warm barrel. Not sure if it is only with the Varget so tomorrow I am going to try some TAC and see if I end up with the same issues. I am running a stock Savage FCP and only at 44.5 under the 175.

Sounds like a fairly hot load TO ME in my rifle. Lots of guys running loads up there. Any idea on your velocity?

Running 43.0 here, barrel seems to heat up normally.

i have been running 45 gr in win brass with the 175 SMk and can run 25 shot strings without too much heatwave interferences, it depends a lot on your barrel profile, mine is a fairly heavy varmint krieger.
try installing a mirage band, it should helps some.

I don't know if what I'm about to say relates to this ..... but with my 22-250 loads, using Varget, the brass isn't hot at all after firing. I'm pushing a 55gr bullet at 3620 fps.

I’m no expert but I’ve run Varget a few times in the past and never noticed any difference in how rapidly the barrel gained temperature compared to other powders I have used. I’ll be captain obvious and state what most already know and that is increased pressure creates increased heat. The thing is that most max loads for the same caliber are near the same pressure give or take 1 or 2 thousand psi, now the variations in the chemistry of the different powders may result in slight temperature differences but I would think that the extreme pressure created upon ignition through the time when the projectile exits the barrel is the main cause of heat buildup in the in the barrel. If you are seeing faster heat buildup my guess would be that it is due to the a higher pressure and not a different powder. But I could be wrong these are just my random thoughts on the subject.

Well I have zero pressure signs until I am in the 25.6-.7 range. Mine is a fairly heavy barrel on the FCP. The barrel profile is almost exactly the same as my 5r and that thing would take forever to heat up. I was running 45g and the 178 in that. I am just wondering if there there could be an issue with the barrel itself.

I will have to get out with some R15 and the 178's I have laying around somewhere.

331 I am getting an average of 2710fps verified.

Is your 5r fluted and your FCP not fluted? This makes the 5r dissipate heat faster. Shooting in a light wind will also cool your barrel faster. I shoot Varget and many other powders and I haven't noticed any difference in barrel temp after a certain number of rounds, but I haven't done a scientific study into the matter either.

I've never noticed Varget heating the barrel up faster. I shoot some fast strings of fire and the barrel gets pretty hbetweenot with Varget or 4064, never noticed the difference the two.
This might not help since a suppressor heats things up fast anyway. 43.0 gr Varget for me.
