Re: Varget & Reloader 15 with heavier bullets for AR
My Rock River ar 1-8 twist 20'" Wylde chamber likes 24.5-24.7 RL-15 69 smks (FACTORY SECONDS!!!) mag length gtg out to 600. Holds Moa for the most part even with the 2 flyers. No brass uniforming was done, like deburing the flash hole or primer pocket uniforming which I always do for my match loads. Just wanted to see what this load would do in plain old Lake City brass.
CCI 400 small rifle primer. Some say don't use that primer, but I got a shit load of them for cheap. So F it, I have never had any issues with them. Shot several hundred rounds with them no slam fires to date. I prefer Winchester primers though, I would use them if could have found them when I got the cci. They must be close in performance since the velocities are near identical.
I think you'll be happy with the RL-15. I like it a lot.
Varget, Schmarget... I use Varget it in one of my .308's. Not because it's supposedly temp insensitive, because somebody gave me a couple pounds they couldn't get it to shoot in their rifle. I monkeyed with it more than they did and guess what, bugholes at 100...
Even IMR4895 gets me cleans at 300 in Service rifle matches so don't get hung up on a powder because it's supposed to be temp insensitive.
You can achieve excellent results with about a half dozen proven powders. Just pick one and tweak it to your rifle. Shit Black Hills supposedly uses Ramshot Tac, and who the heck uses that??? Everyone knows Black Hills Boolitz shoot.
I'm just sayin develop a good load and use it. Keep a shooting log so you can remember your dope in any condition and have fun with it, mostly, have fun with it.
Oh 1 more thing when comparing 2 different powders. I always start testing each load with different powder (or different bullet manufacturer for that matter) on a clean barrel mostly to keep things on an even playing field, it's supposed to make a difference.
I did modify my A2 RRA rifle though...
