Vectronix PLRF 10 is inconsistant

I have one and needed to range off 50 meters. I stood in the same place and ranged off the side of a truck and got readings that varied + or - 2 yards. That is a 4 yard spread.

Does mine need to go back or is this expected? Kinda crazy for a unit that cost more than my recent heart transplant.

What does it do at longer ranges? Is it still +/- the same amt or is it a percentage of the total range? I'm interested in one of these as well.

mine has been very consistent. that's doesn't sounds right?? call the company you bought it from and ask them what they think? also try at longer ranges, 100yds and out and see if it does the same thing.

Sendero Man, DTA has them on their site there is a current thread asking if anyone has gotten one from them in the gear section. Never heard of this problem with the plrf's

Re: Vectronix PLRF 10 is inconsistant

Here is the update. I went to the range and ranged the 500 YARD berm and got a reading of 490 METERS (I range in meters)

I have sent Vectronix emails about the issue, no freaking reply from them.

So, if you are going to buy a Vectronix, don't think that spending a couple of 1000 dollars gets you any customer service.

I assume you ranged the impact berm. If the targets are at 500 yards (457.20 meters) it would not be unusual for the impact area of the berm to be 100 or so feet (in this case, 107.61 feet) behind the target. If you're ranging by hand-held methods then the wobble of your hand could easily cause several meters variation in distance readings. Heat waves will also cause some real problems!

Re: Vectronix PLRF 10 is inconsistant

I'm not remotely surprised that a "berm" at a firing range is not at the perfect range. I believe the PLRF-10, not the stated distance.

At my home range they have numerous steel target impact berms that are supposedly at set distances in meters. they are close, but not perfect, having been built in the 70's without laser technology and without the need to be perfect. Our 800, 900 and 1,000 yard firing points are darn close on distance to the target points (I have ranged them with several different lasers), the impact berm is an additional 25 or so yards from the target points.

What color was the truck? The reason I ask is relevant to your topic.

Re: Vectronix PLRF 10 is inconsistant

Re the inconsistency at 50m, you should try ranging other targets at the same distance and on different ground. When the target is so close and the signals so strong, you might be getting returns on multiple paths with different path lengths (for example, bounces off the ground, hits the truck and returns to the PLRF-10).

Metallic paint?

Depending on the paint job it can give you a bad reading.

Dark, non metallic colors work best for getting a reading if you don't have anything else.
