Vertical grip modification to J allen

I’ve got an email request in for a backward compatible vertically and rotationally adjustable recoil pad.
Please let MDT know that you want one too.

I spoke with Tyler today and I'm going to make a post to explore the level of interest in an aftermarket, more vertical, grip skin and see if there is enough potential market to justify the non-recurring design effort.

As for butt pad, perhaps you have seen where I posted that I replaced my J Allen butt pad with a grind-to-fit thinner Kick-eeze recoil pad (IMO, a real recoil pad) to reduce LOP a 1/2"

Now, of course this will do nothing to provide vertical, lateral, and rotational adjustment to the pad.

But, there is a LOT of adjustable pad hardware out there that is very good. I personally like the 100 Straight product as its the thinnest that I'm aware of (doesn't add a lot to the LOP or weight) with hardened steel where needed. I have one on a K-80 shotgun, been there for a very long time, and I'm quite happy with the quality.

All of these kinds of hdwr are also grind to fit. So, if you can grind to fit a recoil pad to a J Allen (and you can) then you can grind to fit butt pad hdwr to fit also.

The rub is in chassis/stock hole spacing for mounting the hdwr to the stock. It seems that EVERYBODY in the entire world (well, perhaps an exaggeration) but J Allen uses a standard 3.125" hole spacing. The J Allen holes on the chassis (and butt pad) is less than that by a bit (sorry, can't remember exactly off the top of my head).

For the recoil pad we ground on, we kept the top hole and added another one north of the existing hole that the pad came with. Then mounted it up.

The same should be easily done with adjustable hardware, only bit I don't know about is some sort of steel insert for the hole to provide some strength as is the case with the stock mounting holes. But, you smart gun smiths and machinist types could probably solve this with your eyes closed.

Just a thought.

Any chance of you posting up a couple pics of your buttpad?

Moving further discussion about making @Tyler Kemp making us an aftermarket grip skin with more explanation and soliciting level of interest to here:

If I need to, “grind to fit”, I’ll just end up making my own, and perhaps market it myself.
Well, you certainly can do that as it appears you have the skills and machinery to do so.

But do you mean make the entire adjustable hdwr from scratch or just grind one to fit?

I ask because for about $75 for a Jones or 100 Straight, I would think its kind of hard to justify making it all from scratch...no?

I would love for someone to market such a thing except that I have gone to an after-market pad to reduce LOP and really don't want to add more back on. My pad is now 3/4" and the gained 1/2" really improved fit for me. I could, I suppose, go to a 1/2" pad and be able to tolerate a 1/4" add from an adjustable hdwr kit but that's really not much pad.

Do let us know if you are going down that road, yeah?

Cheers

I have an affinity for things that interface as if they’re meant to fit together. That’s the reason I chose a JAE to begin with. The modularity is outstanding. I would make it interface the same way the spacers do.

Ok, so this is how it went

This is the stock pad, right? 1 1/2" thick and not functionally optimal....that is, it ain't a great pad for recoil, IMO, and I can hardly believe that J Allen went to the expense of not only having a custom recoil pad injection molded.

I found that the LOP was just a bit too long so I looked into having a standard recoil pad ground to fit. We went with Kick-eeze which I have on all of my shotguns and whose pads I like very much. But Pachmayr or Limbsaver would work just as well. Depends on what you prefer.

So, I had a couple of LOP spacers that came with a chassis I bought. The spacer has the exact same profile as the butt of the chassis. We used this as a template against which to grind the pad to fit. Please note the circled area at the bottom. If you still have the short PIC rail section on the bottom of the butt stock area, then you can grind a pad to exactly the profile of the butt (in my case, the spacer) and it will fit on perfectly.

However, I put a bag rider on on gun and it extends back further and interfered with the 3/4" pad we were using in the area that I circled. Looked like this (and compare to the pic above of the OG pad with the PIC rail section...you can see that the bag rider changes the clearance at the bottom of the pad). Looked like this and you can see we had a bit of interference at the bottom. So, we just trimmed that little section off of the bottom that is circled in the pic of the spacer, above.

And this is the finished product. I suppose I should chide my buddy the stock smith about the fit at the very top...but considering he didn't charge me....I think I'll keep my mouth shut! hahaha

Hope this is helpful to you.
