Okay, this is way early but my email has been burning up with requests as well the threads about the scope so here you go.

I have to say, Jon has some great pictures and his report is excellent too, so definitely look at that as the video is just an early look.

Initial Reactions

Okay, I missed the scope in transit so I got it a bit late. At the same time the SWFA SS-HD arrived, the Steiner Military 4-16X showed up, and you all have seen the images of the two together.

SH_FLG_SWFA4-1.jpg

I really like the size of the size of the SS-HD, it's not huge, its not heavy, especially compared to other scopes in this range. So I give SWFA high marks for the size.

The reticle, while slightly new, slightly different, it accomplishes the mission. I wasn't at all distracted by it, the reticle is not overly thick and the overall design is well suited for a tactical shooter, even an F T/R shooter.

The eye relief, eye box is out-freaking-standing. They must have been paying attention that is was a pet peeve of mine as it was too good today. I mounted it in a Spuhr Mount and put it on my AI AE. Well the AI AE picatinney rail is not like most others, so the Spuhr mount only fits in one set of slots which brings it to the back. I need it much further forward and I really appreciate that. I will swap the mount out later, but I made it through the day regardless of the eye relief. It's not just good but great.

10 Mils per turn, with accurate horizontal markings. They were dead on in both the windage and elevation which helps to know where zero is. I get it, no zero stops, well I like them too, but with this scope it doesn't matter.

The glass, the glass is very good, nice bright colors, vivid HD picture, no problems there.

To test reliability I dialed up 10 mils, back to zero, shot, dialed up 20 mils back to zero, shot, and then up to 25 mils (Max for this set up) and back and shot. Well within an acceptable range.

So, that is my initial impression. Here is the video is you have any questions, ask... but NO, you cannot have the scope it is mine. All mine.

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

I want to see more. Looks like it will be a good scope at a good price especially for 1000. How was the reticle on 20x? I will be the first to ask is how do you compare it to other scopes so far? I can't wait for 5000. Great review by the way.

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

LL, nice vid, thanks. With the SPUHR mount do you run a 0 MOA cant if your base is already canted?

Cheers,
Rath

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

LOL, that's a 20" AE? I'd say something here, but in the interest of retaining my membership, I'll bite my lip...

Anyway, good little preview. Based on my usage of the 3-9x42, I'm definitely picking one of these up, and so far it looks like it's a great optic. Thanks, Frank and SWFA for putting the effort into organizing this for us!

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

Thanks a lot for the quick review, Frank!!

I know you didn't get to spend as much time with this as you'd have like to have spent prior to posting the vid, but it is an excellent "first glimpse" at this highly-publicized and highly desired new SWFA SS offering. Look forward to your "long-term" thoughts on this one (and getting one from the GB in my own hands)!!

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

Frank, what are your thoughts on the thickness of the reticle. In some of the through the scope pics the reticle looks fine and in other pics it looks a little thick

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

It looks like if you wanted a better ability to center a target you could set your zero to use one of the diamonds(Mildots) and the centered dot in the diamond. That's what I plan to do. just set the scope for 1 Mil high or 1 mil low. What ever works best for you.

That's some funny stuff right there!

I know this is outside the focus of this thread, but here's a huge thanks to Frank and SWFA for making this new optic available to the SH gang at such a stellar price. Thanks!!!

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

Tell me this place doesn't have some serious buying power...
smile.gif
Are you seeing these threads potential advertisers???

Okay Frank, now that we have the "Like" votes up, and SWFA has has the kick-ass group buy price down; You need to give us what we really want...

A knock-down, tossing off the tower, Jacob wading through the pond, Tannerite exploding, head to head review of it against the PST 6-24x FFP. I'm not going to speak for SWFA, but I'm guessing they wouldn't mind sense they sell both.

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

I was sold at "Super Sniper 5-20x50," but this video sealed the deal on this promo being an occasion for multiple purchases. The internals looked really, really robust. How does the glass compare to the Leupold MK4? I know the Vortex has a good reputation, but they aren't Nightforce or S&B. Are these on par with Leupold?

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

Can't wait to get one. The clicks sounded really good while you were making adjustments. Hard to tell from the video, but it looked like they were (for lack of a better word) solid also.

Thanks LL, SWFA and SH.

Re: Video Early Look SWFA SSHD 5-20x

Has anyone got a definitive answer as to whether a sunshade will be available or not? I was told that there was problems with the manufacturer in Japan....when they would get them was questionable IF AT ALL???

What? Who'd you hear that from? Unless his name was Brady or Chris then you are just making the internet a place of useless knowledge.

I really doubt that SWFA would go through all this trouble to release a scope they weren't sure they were going to get!
