VIDEO - Ogive length and consistent seating to the lands

Hello guys. I made a little video here showing how I seat my rounds to an exact measurement from the lands. The original video was on photo bucket, and cut out at 10 min, so I made a 2nd video in a below post. I suggest watching the first video for 10 min, stop, and go to the 2nd video. Or you can just watch the whole thing if you want.

It cuts out......you must only get a 10 min max with where you posted it. It's all starting to make more sense to me as his was one of the questions I have been scratching my head on lately. I hope you post a second half to this........

The one question it raises, and this will totally sound like a "Noob" question, and well, I am, but if the ogive is basically the same on the bullet, why aren't the seating dies made to come up on the ogive to seat it? Or did I misunderstand something?

I addressed that question near the end of the 2nd video. David Tubb makes a modified redding seating die for 6XC that uses a .30 cal seating stem, which makes contact much further down the bullet. I think that the reason Redding doesn't do it like that is because the seating stems would have to be longer to accommodate the VLD bullets, which means they would have to retool everything

I did catch that and immediately googled him and looked through his site. I was curious though as to why the major reloading companies (RCBS, Redding, etc) didn't do that. Seems like a logical thing to do, but you mentioned the retooling factor and you probably hit the nail on the head there. I'll probably invest in the one he offers sooner or later. Wish he had a .338 as well. That would be awesome! Thanks again for posting that video. It really helped me understand a few things I was struggling to understand.

Well he only makes a seater for 6XC. No other calibers I am aware of.

This is the one I keep posting and it's one of many ways to skin this cat. I like this best. Cheap, easy, and reliable.

mijp5 Thanks for the videos. Unfortunately photobucket has blocked the first one because it was too popular. You might want to move them to youtube. I did get enough info from the second one to explain some things to me about consistent seating depth. It is kind of aggravating to spend ~$100 on a "Competition Seating Die" and not get consistent measurements to the ogive. Thanks for explaining the problem

I just embedded it thru youtube. It has an extra couple minutes in it, but for completeness, stop the first video at 10 minutes then watch the 2nd. You can watch both videos too, but there will be some redundancy from the first in the second.

I want to clear up something I said about the sinclair comparator. The measurement obtained from this comparator only works when measuring the same type of bullets relative to one another. For example, the measurement I got for the 168 SMK will not be the same on the 155 Palma if they are both seated the same CBTO distance. I believe Sinclair made a mistake when they designed this piece of kit. They should have made the opening bottom out at .300
