I picked up a 1965 Remington 700 .308 and was wondering if this is good platform for a build. I know metal treatments have changed since then and would this action and bolt be up to par.

Thanks

^^^ Look at the cars now days compared to previous cars. Metal made in USA vs. Plastic foreign jobies...

Re: Vintage Remington 700 Questions

Also, this rifle is equiped with a 2 piece sear. Should I change that out for a 1 piece? This will not be an M40 retro build.

Re: Vintage Remington 700 Questions

I would absolutely get rid of the 2-piece sear, but I would also get rid of the entire trigger. This is just me, but there definitely was a reason Rem went away from this 2-piece design with promptness.

Also, what is being suggested is that you might be able to sell the desirable action if it is in the proper range, and then put the money toward another short action...

Re: Vintage Remington 700 Questions

Ok, I will look into replacing that. The serial number is 214XXX. What is the going rate for one of this vintage for people building an M40?

Re: Vintage Remington 700 Questions

I think I have seen as much as $500+ for an action, this what when they were booming and return stocks were going for nearly $2k... I would say in the $400 range maybe a little more, all you can do is try and see... if you can't get more than $400, perhaps it isn't worth the effort to sell and find another action.

Re: Vintage Remington 700 Questions

Sert103, the serial number is in the correct serial number range for a M40 or M40A1 build, there is a demand for these actions. I have used two of these older actions for builds and they were excellent, please note that the rear bridge height on these older actions is different than newer rifles.
