Any hopes for a Viper PST with out illumination?

I know they have the HS line comming out but no Mil options and the elevation adjustment is in 1/2 instead of 1/4.

I can hope right. Interested in seeing what the price would drop without it.

Re: Viper PST FFP with out Illum. ?

How many of us actually shoot at night? I never have. There are SOME states where hunting at night is legal. And for real snipers/police have a reason to want it. It IS cool. But if you're trying to save money on a scope, seems like the option to have the scope come without it would be a good idea. A lot of us are realistic and don't need illumination.

I have a Nightforce and it doesn't come without it. Seems like it could and would be a lower priced unit.

Re: Viper PST FFP with out Illum. ?

All I wonder is this, how much cheaper would it have to be for you to say "no, i 100% dont need illumination for that difference in price?"

My guess is that it would be maybe a $50 difference. And for probably 75% of people, even if they know they will never use it, theyll still get it just to have it.

Then looking from the manufacturers POV, thats one more eyepiece they have to manufacture for a very small group of people.

I mean I could be wrong, it could end up being more like $100 or more, and then I can see more people living without it.

Some states may not allow illuminated recticals. I will be hunting Montana this Nov and I hope to have one of these PST Viper. Anyone know if Montana allows lit rectical scopes?

Re: Viper PST FFP with out Illum. ?

From what I understand, when they say illumination devices, that does not include a reticle. Doesnt really make sense why you would not be able to use a lit reticle, no real advantage there. Although there's a lot of things the DNR says that dont make sense. (ie, in Ohio, mufflers (suppressors) are not allowed for hunting any quadraped...not even freaking groundhogs technically)

They're OK in Montana, but last I checked they were not OK in Wyoming. Though I think if you took the battery out a warden would need to be a real dick to hassle you. But no worries in Montana.

I found the illumination very useful on this scope hunting whitetails in thick brush in low light conditions (not night time, just from sunset to :30 after). The reticle is very nice but it would be a tad thinner than optimum for this use without illumination. Without illumination a reticle needs to be about as thick as the IOR 3-18 FFP for me to like it in those situations.

With the illumation, this reticle works very well:

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a State that doesn't allow an illuminated reticle for hunting. All the red dot scopes would be out. For the price of the PST I don't think it would make sense to have another assembly line just to drop the price point maybe 100 bucks. I shoot at night 90 percent of the time because that's the only free time I get. However ask your self if it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Re: Viper PST FFP with out Illum. ?

Sometimes it depends on the form and function as well.

I haven't been able to play with the PST but it's general "form" appears similar to that of the leupold 3.5-10 mark4 in the placement of the illumination knob and elevation/parallax knobs. In the leupold for me that illumination knob obstructs my clear view of my elevation knob setting even with both eyes open when behind the rifle. It's less of an issue with the parallax knob as I can see that through my left eye fairly easily. It's one of the big reason's I was disappointed to see the knob implemented as it was. I'd rather be able to easily see my elevation and parallax settings than have a big illumination knob in the way. Yes I can tilt my head around and see the settings but it would be nice if companies could figure out ways so the illumination didn't obstruct the view of the knobs.

As to the illumination itself, I'd rather have it than not have it even though I rarely if ever use it. But I'd trade illumination for being able to easily and clearly see both my elevation and parallax knobs without having to flop my head around behind the rifle.
