I took my 10 year old son out in the wonderful weather up in the Galax area for the youth hunt this weekend as well. We put in a long morning seeing only a couple of does but he wanted to hold out for the buck. Papa, (my Dad) had a couple of really really nice bucks patterned for him. We went back out about 3pm and got set up for the rest of the day. We did not see a single critter until about 6:30pm when the rain let up just a bit and wind died off. We saw 5 deer come out into the field about 800 yards out, all bucks but the big ones where not in the group. I guess the big boys did not like the weather.
Well given the weather that we had all sat through we decided it was time to try to close the gap a bit. We were able to move to within 500 yards before we ran out of hills to keep in between us and the deer. We were hunting a really large pasture area. We crawled up to a fence line just across the ridge from the deer and dropped the legs on the bipod and started setting up for the shot. I ranged them and they were 450 yards. I dialed 9.5 moa into the S&B on his rifle and thankfully the wind had died off to nearly nothing so that was not a factor. I told him to pick the one the he wanted and let me know before he sends it. After a few seconds of him sizing them up through the scope he told me which deer to get glass on. He settled in behind his favorite 308 and worked his redman rear bag until he had a solid rest and squeezed the trigger. That was all she wrote, he was down in his tracks. Then the celebrating began!! I am not sure who was happier him, his Papa or me!!!
A well deserved trophy after sticking it out in the rain all day.
When we got to his deer he started counting and came up with 10 points. I would called in a 7 pointer with 3 small kicker points but after he put in the day that he did being out in the rain all day I was not going to correct his count, he earned it for sure. Hey back when I first started hunting we counted everything as well, if you could hang a ring on it, it was a point!!
He has really practiced this summer and has been ringing steel out to 700 yards with great consistency so I knew that shot was not a problem for him and he proved me right for sure!!!

Ahh. See a smile like that and a memory that will last forever is exactly why it's great to get the kids into the field!!!!!!!!!!!!
